Here at ModCloth, we take great pride in giving our products unique and (hopefully) charming names. It’s definitely a fun job – but one that’s not as easy as you’d think!

Every time new products arrive, all the girls in the office gather around for a brainstorming session where we blurt out our first reactions to the item. Sometimes it’s really general, things like “very floral”, “super pretty”, or “so retro”, while other times we get really specific, like “this bag reminds me of those rulers from high school Geometry class” or “these shoes should be worn on a long stroll through a fancy park”. For those keeping score, those two became the Vintage Theorem Purse and the Gazebo Flats.

Now it’s your turn. We want to hear what you think! This is a brand new cardigan that just came in. We know it’s cool, we know we like it, but we haven’t thought of the perfect name yet. Can you help us?

Name me!

From now until Wednesday, March 5th, leave a comment on this post with your name ideas. We’ll choose our favorite on Thursday. The name will actually be used on the site and seen by thousands of people! If your name is chosen, we’ll also send you a cardigan in your size (sorry, this one is only available in S, M, L), a Twisting Tree Necklace in silver, and a Lovely Dove Necklace.

Ready? Let’s play Name That Cardigan!

We’ve returned from our last buying trip of the season and it sure feels good to be home. Las Vegas is fun, but all the bright lights and noise can quickly become annoying, especially if you’re like me and not willing to gamble your life savings away. There were definitely some good times though – like the Star Trek bar at our hotel…

…and the gift shop full of Barry Manilow merchandise…

Mini Manilows

I mean, who wouldn’t want a Mini-Manilow cut-out? In any case, we’re back and ready to have an awesome Spring. I don’t know about you, but I’m so ready to start wearing dresses without tights!

I’ve mentioned that I love to decorate with unique prints but sometimes the two dimensional world can be a bit dull. Adding the perfect little three dimensional objects to your space will make your life much cuter. I have carefully placed decorative objects throughout my apartment, handmade little creatures live on my window sills and in my bookshelves. It is important to me that I not become a crazy knick-knack lady so I’ve handled placement and quantity with care and I advise you to do the same.

I would love to add some of Abigail Brown’s work to my collection. Each truly a work of art, her stuffed sculptures are made out of new and vintage materials. Based in London, Abigail makes each object by hand, creating delicate personalities out of fabric and wire. Another Etsy find, this shop features only a few special pieces at a time. You’ll have to move fast to get the perfect one.

I can’t believe it, but our major buying season is almost over. We just got back from our second trip to New York which, somehow, was probably even more fun than the first.

Some highlights:

  • the delicious fake meat at Red Bamboo
  • cookies and cream rice pudding at Rice to Riches
  • a tradeshow just for shoes (also known as “Did I die and go to heaven?“)
  • and, of course, a visit to the famed Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn.

It’s funny: even when we spend the entire day shopping for “work”, all we want to do afterwards is shop some more. I left Beacon’s with this crazy little number…
Sequin Skirt!

Your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you! It is indeed covered in black sequins and trimmed in silver sequins. It’s pretty awefulsome, but I can’t wait to wear it. I’m hoping to work it into an outfit this week while we’re shopping our last major tradeshow of the season in the capital of all things sparkly and over the top – Las Vegas.

Valentine’s Day is only a week away and time is running out to find that special little gift for that special little someone. Even if you don’t have a sweetie, there’ s no reason to dread the pink and red mess that is February 14th. Some of the best valentines I’ve received have been from friends and family so why not take this day to enjoy your favorite people?

I have always believed that handmade cards make the best gifts. If you are not so artistically inclined or simply too busy, Etsy will come to the rescue. There is an abundance of cute valentines to be found and with such a vast selection, you’re sure to find the perfect message. Whether you’re shopping for your significant other, a friend, or you have a special message to send, have a good holiday.

Being a buyer is certainly glamorous. Who wouldn’t love to travel to new cities and shop all day? But there’s plenty of not-so-glamorous work that goes into preparing for buying trips: calculations of sell-through rates, order quantities, trend predictions, competitor research and so on. Basically, lots of sitting behind a computer and lots of doing math, definitely not my favorite things. But it’s an important part of my job and it helps me make better decisions. In fact, you can help too! What are you looking for this Spring? Anything that you can’t live without? Let me know and we’ll do our best to find it. Personally, I can’t stop thinking about boat shoes ever since I saw a whole page dedicated to them in a recent issue of Teen Vogue. And yes, I am a 23 year old who reads (and loves!) Teen Vogue and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

So, what do you think?
