Here at ModCloth, we take great pride in giving our products unique and (hopefully) charming names. It’s definitely a fun job – but one that’s not as easy as you’d think!
Every time new products arrive, all the girls in the office gather around for a brainstorming session where we blurt out our first reactions to the item. Sometimes it’s really general, things like “very floral”, “super pretty”, or “so retro”, while other times we get really specific, like “this bag reminds me of those rulers from high school Geometry class” or “these shoes should be worn on a long stroll through a fancy park”. For those keeping score, those two became the Vintage Theorem Purse and the Gazebo Flats.
Now it’s your turn. We want to hear what you think! This is a brand new cardigan that just came in. We know it’s cool, we know we like it, but we haven’t thought of the perfect name yet. Can you help us?

From now until Wednesday, March 5th, leave a comment on this post with your name ideas. We’ll choose our favorite on Thursday. The name will actually be used on the site and seen by thousands of people! If your name is chosen, we’ll also send you a cardigan in your size (sorry, this one is only available in S, M, L), a Twisting Tree Necklace in silver, and a Lovely Dove Necklace.
Ready? Let’s play Name That Cardigan!

2 loves
How about the “Perp Cardigan”? because PERPetrators go to jail, and the sweater’s stripes run PERPendicular to each other!
Perhaps the Jailhouse Racket (rock+jacket, refers to the ruckus you’d make while wearing it)? Or, hmm, the Referee’s Choice? (It reminds me of the unis NFL refs wear.)
Beetlejuice Cardigan.
I love that movie.
(Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!)
How about “The Skyscraper Sweater?” the stripes remind me of large corporate buildings. At first I was thinking “Big City smog sweater,” but I though that was too ugly a name for such a fantastic piece.
I’m thinking the “Mannered Chaos Cardigan,” and here’s why: perpendicular stripes? Kinda crazy (I know my mother would Not Approve), but yet, on this cardigan, quite classy. As in, my mom would definitely give me two thumbs up for this cardigan.
Besides, doesn’t everyone want a little chaos in their closet? It just sounds so epic. :)
Inverted Reality Cardigan.
Because the stripes go one way and then switch to another way? Haha, I like it anyway.
Zoot Suit Cardigan!!!
Nouvelle Vague Prison Shake. It made me think of the striped dress Jean Seberg wore in A Bout De Souffle. French inspired, new wave, fashion forward prison wear! Very Godard!
“Foot Locker Inmate”
Keeping with the prison theme…
The Folsom Blues Cardigan (for Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash).
It reminded me of that. :p
I like Horizontally Challenged Cardigan.
three things come to mind:
i hate to jump on the bandwagon, but the stripes ARE reminiscent of prison attire, so the first thing that came to mind was that it should be called something like the ‘criminally chic’ cardigan.
Hm… The bandeau cardigan. I think the meaning and sound of the word match the cardigan well!
Pat Benatar cardigan
Upfront Cardigan?
Upfront and side cadigan?
Tunnel Outerwear Cardigan
Because who doesn’t love the occasional cheesy pun :P? And it really does have that ‘classic prison garb’ feel (so naming it after the ‘classic prison escape plan’ seemed fitting)
how bout the tailored sailor or the stripped suit-sweater? Thats what came to mind first when lookin at the cardigan.. On second thought how bout the caught up on strips cardigan.
The Contradiction, or the Contrary cardigan. The directions of the stripe contradict one another, and run in contrary directions.
Either way I love it! Would totally wear it with a red scarf and a pair of dark skinny jeans.
The Zoolander Cardigan!
The Modern Jailbird? The Seeing Stripes Cardigan? The Tragically Hip? The Open Crossroads? Illict Intersect?
“Head over heels” cardigan!
The Freelance Cardigan, because it’s doing its own thing and not listening to the lame ‘all stripes should go the same way’ rule.
“Time Warp Cardi” …
Whether speeding through life’s monotonies or stopping for a perfect kiss in the rain, it’s got you covered.
how about black bencher cardi? Simply since the black strips kinda remind me of sitting down on a just-painted black bench, plus it puns on ‘back bencher’ a political term?
I am certain it needs a z in the name somewhere. I suggest the Zazoo Cardigan or the ZoomZoom Cardigan.
On The Flipside.
“Cardigan Illusion”. Since its difficult to tell from one side to anther, it reminded me of those house of illusion at the fair:)
Heidi
‘Swhich Way? cardigan
Because it’s a contraction of “It’s which way?”
“Destroy Everything You Touch” Cardigan
I really want to wear this cardigan when I go to the Ladytron concert this spring. Another Ladytron-inspired title could be the “Beauty No. 2″ Cardigan, which additionally associates it with Edie Sedgwick.
How about the ‘Lesley’, after the leading lady in Quadrophenia – this cardigan has such a Brighton Beach Mod feel about it…
got it.
the “Free Me Cardigan”
i know its the jail theme, albeit more subtly….but i like the idea of a positive and somewhat sultry (in my opinion) connotation.
What about the “Call Waiting Cardigan”? You have two “lines” going at once!
Hows about “Not-so-pinstripe”
:)
What about the ‘Doing Time Cardigan’
The Pretender. You never know which way is up. Plus has a total Chrissy Hynde/80s vibe.
I actually didn’t even think of jail when I saw it… I suppose my warped mind didn’t catch the similarities. Oh well.
How bout “The Plumb-Plane Cardigan”…plumb being a synonym for vertical..and plane a synonym for horizontal. Catchy, no?
Reminds me of the clothing some of the charactors in the ’60s BBC series “The Prisoner” wore …so how about “The Villager”?
Attack of the clash cardigan.
The Twice Cardigan.
Twiggy Time–it’s almost as if i’ve seen her in this. Mod for sure and the stripes just scream for a twist–Twiggy Twist, maybe
just thought of “the NAME cardigan” or like no-name cardigan or “the (you) name-it cardigan”
one thing comes to mind… and maybe I have a twisted mind and I should go back to the hills from whence I came? Banjo Cardigan.
Papillion Cardigan — Papillion — great book about a convict’s escape and a great fit for this great cardigan!!
This cardigan reminded me of a piece by Ed Rossbach titled “Reconstituted Commercial Textile” that is on display at the MFA Boston right now. (Take a look here: http://www.mfa.org/exhibitions/sub.asp?key=15&subkey=3909. Click on “Tour” and the piece I’m talking about is #12.)
Anyway, I think this should be called the Warps and Wefts Cardigan (warps are the threads that go vertically and wefts are the ones that go horizontally in weaving).
The Heart and Jailbreaker Cardigan?
The “Ties with the MÖBius” Cardigan. I know it’s only a sight rhyme, but the cardigan looks like it ties you up, has a 1920s gangster look, and twists like a Möbius band. Another idea I had was, the “I’m with the MÖBius Band” Cardigan which takes into account it’s rock n’ roll flavor.
Fair Play Cardigan because it’s definitely not foul.
“Which way to go” cardigan
Everyone seems to be picking up on the whole jailhouse vibe, which I can’t say I disagree with. The first thing that popped into my head was “The Shawshank Perfection.” Simple, pithy, and a slant rhyme no less.
ps- I’ve been looking into ways to skip a step and have my paycheck given directly to y’all. It just seems easier.
“the barcode cardigan”
“Its a Wonderful Cardigan”
Its gray scale like its a wonderful life but is still feel-good just like the movie.
Plus it looks like George Bailey’s tie.
http://secondthoughts.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/12/04/300pxits_a_wonderful_life.jpg
The Scissorhands Cardigan!
The first thing I thought of when I saw it was Edward Scissorhands. :D
perhaps “jailhouse rock” or “clever cardigan” because it cleverly pulls together any look.
Oh dear, I hope I’m not late. D:
How about: Les Raies Cardigan
French is fun. ♥
windy day cardigan.
its simple, like the jacket. :D
“Stripes Ahoy”
Instead of the prison theme….I’m going with sailors. Something about the neckline reminds me of a sailors uniform and that little blue tie they wear. And of course stripes go with sailors!
the Zigga Cardigan ( when i saw it i thought zig zag so i mashed it up and i got zigga)
Binderlines Cardigan.
It makes me think of a school binder.
The Compass Cardigan- because the lines go in all directions.
Raie cardi
This sweater reminds me of the architecture in Paris. “Raie” means “stripe” in French.
MODern Love sweater
The “Moonstruck Cardigan”….
The “Haywire Cardigan”….
the stripes going different ways are crazy looking (but awesome), and the words are both synonyms of sorts…
The Prince! I don’t really know how that fits, it just popped into my mind when I saw it.
The Secretary Sophisticate
‘perfectly greymetrical’
I think something like “Handy Striper”!
How about …
“read(ing) between the lines cardigan” or
“in memory of garbage can cardigan”…because it reminds me of 90s grunge or
“color me cardigan” for the lack of color.
Either “Rolling Stones Cardigan” or “Modlines Cardigan”. :)
Every-Which-Way Cardigan
The Möbius Cardigan.
“It has the mathematical property of being non-orientable”, which suits this perfectly.
“Caught in Grandpa’s Closet”
I think the meaning is obvious.
The cardigan is total rockstar to me, and especially reminds me of 80s British rockers…
God Save the Queen Cardigan?
Brit Rock Cardigan?
British Punk Cardigan?
London Rocker Cardigan?
For that matter…
Boxing Day Cardigan
Fish and Chips Cardigan
Oi! Oi! Oi! Cardigan
The Rolling Stones in stripes: http://www.mediastorehouse.com/image/Rolling-Stones_180599.jpg
Roger Daltrey: http://www.will.uiuc.edu/tv/programs/prairiefire/images/exhibit-Roger-Daltry.jpg
It makes me think of a classy lady sitting on a low couch with a long cigarette, elaborate hair and a checkered (or in this case, striped) past, so how about the “Bitter Sophisticate Cardigan”
I’d say “Ze-dorable Cardigan”. Mixture of Zebra and Adorable of course!
Vampire Celeste.
To me, it says Vampire all over it for some reason.
AND IT SOUNDS COOL YEAAAAAA.
Directional Confusion Cardigan
Directionally Challenged Cardigan
Directionally Confused Cardigan
But.. those all seem like something you’d have already thought of… How about…
Indecisive Stripes Cardigan or
Contradicting Cardigan
I like all those, lol. I think they’re simple and sweet and they fit. And they aren’t confusing.
The Pirates of “MOD”hattan!
The Latitude
The “Relativity Cardigan.” It reminds me of the M.C. Escher piece, Relativity. Up, down and all about.
another-”Sweeney Mod” This reminds me of Helena Bonham Carter from that movie!
”paradox” or ”georeflex” sound good to me!
Well possibly the “Who’s sorry now ?” cardigan.. orrrrr.. the “Penis envy” cardigan because it reminds me of Crass and 80′s punk and it’s a little androgynous, which is everything great and fashionable. Maybe, “Oi ! toy” or “Okay, time for plan B” or “Between the bars” cardigan or something.
How about Jacket Dissonance? Because the stripes show dissonance. . (art nerd :P)
Ok, so I’ve got 3….take your pic!
The vertizontal cardigan.
The Horizirtical cardigan.
” I wanna see the warden” cardigan.
The middle one is my least fav.
Yay..this is fun! I wish I could name clothes full time!
The Un-Perfectly Hepburn Cardigan
Well, one of mine is close to others but it’s the first thing I thought of when I saw it.
Jailbird Chic
Striking Stripes
Business To Go Cardigan
I say:
The Cleveland Shortline Railway Cardigan.
Because for some reason, it reminds me of railroads, and railroads remind me of monopoly.
That, or just the ‘Crossroads Cardigan’, but I guess that must have been suggested already.
Convict cardi?
Emo dreams?
Line-up cardi (like when u get suspects in a line up – keeping with the con theme)?
So Cute It’s Criminal Cardigan
I, like apparently 90% of the people, got a sort of jailhouse vibe from it. But it’s definitely way cuter than a prison uniform!
the windy city cardigan.
“off the straight and narrow cardigan” because of the off center-zipper…and apparent jailhouse feel.
How about the “Razzle Dazzle Cardigan” or umm, “Violate me” cardigan or the “Stop and Stare” cardigan or my last suggestion the undisclosed royalty cardigan. WHy? because this site not everyone knows about which is good so that not everybody will be rocking the same thing, it’s more like a secret. And a person wearing this, can add some skinny jeans, a plain colored scarf and with a chic hat and it will deffinitely look like she’s royalty. More like an urban, rebelious royalty because of the stripes which reminds me and im sure other people do too like jail. The person who wears the this better not be afraid to rock it.
It looks sort of New Wave and mathematical with all those intersecting lines, so how about :
The Depeche Code Cardigan
merry go round
How about the Parisian Winter Cardigan?
To me this looks very Parisian and hip. Stripes always remind me of Paris style and this looks so comfy and cozy and like it would fit right in at a Parisian coffee shop or wandering the Louvre on a rainy day.
“The classy retro Cardigan”
raie d’illusion cardigan (illusion stripe)
Stripe tease
Tim Burton Cardigan :)
OK so for some reason it reminded me of a map…
so i decided i like “the latitude and longitude cardigan”…dorky yes…but for some reason i like it!
‘Papillon’ – reminds me of the Steve McQueen in the movie of the same name.
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1050628/images/28steve.jpg
“linear chaos cardigan”
Cardigan De Ville
You know, like Cruella, except not so evil.
& pugs are my life, btw. this little guy in the corner is staring me down!
the “skewed perception” cardigan
different from the norm, and far better that way!
I think it should be called the “Trapper Keeper” because its pattern and design remind me of my old binders from grammar school. :)
Coit-igan …. a la Coit Tower, from which one might have a charming view of Alcatraz…. added bonus, the sly hint of a humorous double-entendre, one might be caught perhaps in coitus delictus; in point of fact, the Delictus Cardigan would work as well.
or maybe the Quincy Cardigan, after the cute granola goth boy in my 9th grade orchestra class, he always looked very clean and very fetching in grey and black, with a red ribbon tied in his hair.
The only other thing it particularly calls to mind is a comb, and indeed, to my mind, Fine Tooth Cardigan has a satisfying ring…
Two thoughts:
“Cool Hand Cardigan” In keeping with the jailhouse stripes, and my enduring love for a young Paul Newman.
“The Wright Cardigan” Because the linear planes remind me of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture!
Conjunction Junction. =p
“Keep Me In Line” Cardigan
“Jailbird’s the Word” Cardigan
“Sugar and Stripes” Cardigan
“Stripe Me” Cardigan (Cute, sounds kind of kinky if your mind works that way)
“Sweet Surrender” (Jailhouse connotation…surrender=stripes for you!)
“Stripe Happy”
“Cuddle Me All Ways” Cardigan (as in always, but the stripes point all ways…teehee. Cute.)
“I Love You All Ways” Cardigan (similar concept as above; could also be “Love Me All Ways”.)
I tried to marinate on this for a while, and I’ll probably think of some more later :P Cuddle Me All Ways/Love Me All Ways are my definite favorites. Cute for a very cute piece!
Semi-corner Cardi, because the stripes appear to be at right angles but you don’t see the real intersections or corners they would make.
Jailbird Rocker’s Cardi… for the obvious prison-stripe look that everyone seems to be catching onto. (the Elvis? Jailbird/Jailhouse Chic?)
Blinded Cardi because it somewhat reminds me of Venetian blinds… Angular Blinded Cardi, Venetian Cardi.
Midnight-and-Morning Cardi, because of the alternating stripe colors… Midnight-and-Cloud Cardi, Night and Day Cardi, Stormy Weather Cardi.
Parisian Audrey Cardi, because it reminds me of something Audrey Hepburn would wear when she went to Paris in Funny Face…
“See My Service Stripes”
“Midnight Candystriper” or “Cloudy Candystriper”
Oops, I almost miss this fantastic chance!
I will call it “Berlin Venus” Cardi.
This is definitely European to me, but not like London or Paris.
This just reminds me of Berlin. Their sharp-lined arcitectures and the gray sky.
And the beautiful drape and collar deserve the name “Venus”.
Modern + Classic/Cool + Feminine. Such a wonderful piece!
Buhtachresti Cardie
This is just like a cardigan that I brought from my treasured homeland (Romania) in the city of Buhtachresti. But I outgrew it long ago :(
How about the arrested development cardigan? I think i win.
The ” I can totally rock stripes” cardigan
breezy cardigan
My choice for a great name for this outfit is: “Mocha gets in your eyes”.
