ModCloth: What have you been doing since Project Runway?
Kara: Well, I had my business prior to the show. So I’ve just kind of really expanded on it and built up a really phenomenal business; and it just keeps growing.
MC: What is your line called?
Kara: My line is under my namesake- Kara Janx. I started it two years before the show.
MC: What was the most important thing you learned from Project Runway?
Kara: I learned that design is a process, as with everything- it’s such a learning experience. There was such a learning curve. And with that comes patience, dedication, and a lot of hard work.
MC: Were there any funny or crazy behind-the-scenes moments that didn’t air in your season’s final cut?
Kara: There were so many, but we’re not at liberty to elaborate on them- other than what you’ve seen. Sorry about that though. I’d love to expose everything, but I’d probably be shot.
MC: How would you describe your personal style?
Kara: It’s pretty casual, but edgy. You know, it’s kind of laid back but it’s always kind of quirky and a little tweaked.
MC: Who are some of your favorite designers?
Kara: Marc Jacobs, for sure. And also Phillip Lim and Alexender Wang.
MC: Are you still designing each season, or have you taken a break since your baby was born?
Kara: No break, definitely. I enjoy designing, and I enjoy feeling like I’m really hands-on with the process. That’s what I get a kick out of the most.
MC: What are the biggest challenges of being a designer and a mom?
Kara: It’s balance- definitely trying to give as much attention to my baby as I can and just really nurturing that, as well as the business.

MC: We adore your kimono dresses.
Kara: Thank you, love. The kimono dress has been selling every day for the last two and a half years. It’s quite phenomenal. I thank God for that.
MC: Where can we find your clothes?
Kara: At karajanx.com, and then across the country and overseas; and anyone can always e-mail me with particulars.
MC: Do you have a favorite designer from Season 5?
Kara: No, I actually think this is the worst Project Runway ever. And I’m such a fan of the show- because if the show is good, then it’s good for me. But I just feel that this season has just been a bust. I know I should be nicer, but that’s my sentiment toward it.
MC: What are your future plans?
Kara: To just really grow the business and my family.
MC: Anything else you want to add?
Kara: I’m just really dedicated to my business and good, wearable design. And I know that it’s really hard for aspiring designers. It’s just a matter of really putting your head down and working hard at it.
ModCloth would like to thank Kara, Alison, Kenley, and Kelly!! You guys rock!

2 loves
Oh wow..I just discovered this! (see what school does, detracts me from blog reading)
I loved Kara’s work on the show and her Kimono dress is always a classic! This was great!
I’ve never given this a try, but I think it’s about time I do.
