It’s not often we write about men. But in the spirit of the ever-popular end-of-year list, we just had to compile our own quirky and quite extensive (seems we have no problem writing about this particular topic) list of our favorite gentlemen from 2008. People Magazine may have dubbed Hugh Jackman the Sexiest Man Alive, but we’re partial to our own less-traditional superlatives. So, without further ado, we tip our hats and open our hearts to the 2008 ModMen of the Year!!

Don’t let our size fool you – Pittsburgh is a hotbed of interesting and talented men. Here is our short list of the local guys that entertain and inspire us.

Gregg Gillis, better known as mashup sensation Girl Talk, shows millions of fans that Pittsburgh loves a good dance party. He now sells out venues across the world, but we remember being one of a handful of attendees at his early events at Garfield Artworks.

Hey-o everyone!
I’m Natalie, and the new(er) designer at ModCloth. I began heading the imagery for the blog a month or so ago and plan to keep on bringin’ it! Other than designing for the blog, I design some of the homepage layouts and newsletters that end up in your email. I also help style the photo shoot designs and any other imagery that is out there on the web for your viewing pleasure! I love designing and I love vintage fashion, so this job has ended up being a perfect match for my interests.

[Part of a set by Crafty Alien, this tiny felted hedgehog is too cute!]
As the weather gets colder and more evenings are spent cuddled up at home, I long for new knitting projects to keep me busy. One of my goals for the new year is to always have a knitting project in progress and as my knitting books begin to look stale, I turn to Etsy. Whether you’re just beginning to knit or are a seasoned pro, there are patterns to match all skill levels.
From gifts to accessories and apparel, here are are some of my favorite patterns…

Every girl has that one celebrity she looks to for fashion inspiration. She pores over magazines and websites, squealing excitedly at the glimpse of her style muse in a new pair of heels or handbag, forwarding links to her friends to check out how amazing her idol looks even just out at the grocery store. For me, there are two, and their names are Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. I admit they’ve made questionable choices that have made them unpopular in some circles, but it’s undeniable that their style is contagious.

1. Learn something new, either by taking a class at the local community college, reading a how-to or just doing it, already! Some specific things we’d love to learn include sewing, changing our own oil, cooking a delicious meal from scratch and hosting a tea.
2. Take, paint or write a self-portrait to get a sense of how you see yourself. Check out ModCloth photog Danielle’s self-portrait:

3. Take better care of our bodies. We don’t necessarily mean dropping pounds (like every commercial seems to be urging us to do this month), but we do mean forming (and sticking to) healthier habits, like exercising, taking vitamins, drinking more water and cutting down on fat and sugar. Need help getting started? Here’s a Fitness Plan, courtesy of The Center for Young Women’s Health.
