Oh man, I’m sure some of you love Miley Cyrus, and I’m not ragging on her in particular, but there are ways to be comfy-cozy without wearing your PJs in public. I’m going to be flying off to Alaska in a couple days and I’ve started thinking about what to wear on the plane. Rather than sporting pajamas or sweats, try a super soft jersey maxi like the Pixelated Princess Dress. It’s so soft you’ll forget you’re not in your jammies . Throw on something like the Meadowlark Jacket to stay warm on the plane. Security is always a necessary bummer, but try to make it hassle-free by wearing easy-to-remove shoes like The Sandals of Eden and metal-free jewelry like the Urban Forest Ring. And these days, they barely feed you anything on the plane unless you want to use all your spending money. Sometimes they won’t even give you water! I recommend bringing a tasty snack in the Banana Boat Bento Box and an empty Fawn in the Forest Bottle to fill with from the drinking fountain after you pass through security. The Brick Lane Bag is big enough to carry all of your snacks, books, magazines, iPod, and you name it on the plane with you. How do you dress for travel?

Very helpful Turi!
I am so glad I bought that dress!!
I’m a college student, so whenever I fly home, everyone else I know is too. I always dress nicely for airports because I know I’m going to run into people I know. Plus, it’s nice to make an effort to look nice for the people you’re going to meet once you land!
that outfit/bag combo is perfect for a plane ride home–especially for me, because my home is sunny, sundress florida!
Cute cute cute recommendations. I trend towards yoga pants if it’s international travel. They are uber-useful in foreign countries.
Awesome post, Turi. I like how you tied this entry in with your own life!
I lived in Alaska for 9 months a little while back and I think you should rethink wearing a sundress on the plane. You will be freezing when you get to AK. There will quite possibly be snow still on the ground- or it will be down-pouring. If the weather is sunny, it most likely won’t be over 65 degrees. As I said, I was there for 9 months and I only took off my sweatshirt once! And I NEVER had a ppair of shorts on. Just giving you a heads up so you don’t freeze!
Great ideas!!
I always try to wear something really classy and chic while I travel, but also comfortable. Maybe my super comfy (and wrinkle free!) dress with a nice little cardigan.
One time my family was so dressed up, we got moved up to first class! That beats wearing pajama pants any ol’ day.
ha! i own those. but i only wore them in public once i swear! funny even if u wear the comfiest stuff in public u can still feel uncomfortable.
Turi, you totally read my mind! I travel almost every other week to buy for ModCloth, and I always wear maxi dresses on the plane. They’re the best! I also have the Brick Lane Bag and it’s perfect for travel – lightweight and big enough to hold all my magazines, books, sweaters, scarves, etc that I might need.
Hi Krista! Thanks for the cold weather warning! Actually, I was born in Alaska (although I spent some of my life living in Seattle) and it does get pretty warm up in Anchorage during the summer. I looked at the weather report yesterday and it was 75 degrees! Yay! Plus, the long days of sunlight make for warmer evenings. I think I’ll be good to go with the jacket, but you’re right, it’s always good to check the temp before you fly.
i love the dress, jacket and accesories but for a long haul flight they just arent practical…the denim jacket wouldnt be very comfortable or warm and i dont want to be tripping over a maxi dress while struggling to reach the the tiny plane bathroom….i go for comfy and warm all the way….although i would not go as far as miley and wear pjs….maybe a cute tea dress, warm cardi, leggings and ballet flats and id bring a big pashmina too because sometimes with the air conditioning it can be just freezing on a flight
I like how I have similar PJ’s to Miley, but I never worn them out in public. This outfit seems cute but I have to agree with laurenc that it is not very pratical, espically on a long flight. I always oupt for jeans and ballet flats because they easily come off. Also, a really comfy jacket because it gets cold on the plane.
When I flew back home to Boston last Tuesday, I wore a short eggplant boatneck sweater with wide elbow-length sleeves and big buttons, a cream-colored lacy cami, and an a-line mid-calf length skirt with a cream background and olive and purple flowers on it, with my brown maryjanes.
Blair makes a great point, it’s important to dress nicely when you travel because airline agents tend to treat you with more respect (since you’re not showing up in their workplace dressed like a slob), and you might be bumped up to first class where they have a dresscode! I was lucky enough to be bumped up last week for my longer flight, and I felt very pampered. It was well-worth it!
I agree with laurenc in that that outfit would not be practical, simply because of the temperature and the hassle of the length of the dress, as cute as it is. And tara, while jeans are fine for a short flight, if you’re flying overseas, you definitely do not want to be wearing jeans for a 14+ hour flight!
I would opt for leggings or tights with a cute, soft tunic or dress, a nice warm cardi, and either flat ankle boots or ballet flats, depending on the season, And a blanket tucked in my carry-on would be a smart idea next time (on the last leg of my flight home from France I froze to death!)
I’m really nostalgic for past eras like the 50s and 60s and love traveling, so I always dress really nice, especially when I fly: dresses, or skirts, stockings, and heels. Sometimes I get some crazy stares, but I always feel fabulous.
i would definatly agree with most of the posts here. Skip the jeans on long flights, long dresses could be a pain (tho i havent tried any skirts longer then my calf) and keep in mind the weather at your destination. I would ALWAYS reccomend a nice soft scarf to use as a pillow or mini blanket, i know that has saved me on many a flight!
thanks for the tips guys!
