So first of all, a disclaimer: I don’t think Naomi Campbell picked this outfit out! She wore it in a cameo on Ugly Betty while playing softball. But still, I thought it would be a good (bad) example of the wrong way to wear tights with shorts. Wearing tights with shorts can be a great way to transition your summer clothes into fall and early winter. But if you’re someone who falls into the camp of being scared of looking like Naomi in this faux-pas pic, try wearing neutrals so your tights don’t look too flashy and make you feel uncomfortable. I started with the adorable, Zooe- Deschanel-evoking Santorini Shorts, with subtle pleats and cute button details. The high waist is perfect for tucking in a classic top like the Hepburn Blouse. I chose the Dots and Daisies Tights in Brown, because they have a pattern, but don’t overpower the look. And I adore the Edie Wedgewick Shoes, so I had to incorporate them into the look. Wedges will make your legs look long, but are comfy for a day at work or school. Playing off of the green in the shoes, I chose the Charter School Cardigan in British Literature, and matched it with the Stylin’ Stag Ring. To finish off the look, I added the delicate Tempus Fugit Necklace and the Star of the Rodeo Bag.

I say a big no to tights with shorts. Definitely not a fashion I will be partaking in.
Having said that, I adore the outfit that has been picked out, would look beautiful on some girls.
I just had a convo with my guy friend in England the other day. I told him how I *finally* broke down and got some tights (black ones – still unworn but the idea is there) and he laughed and said I’m getting as bad as the british girls. I said, “No, we over here still only wear tights with dresses and skirts. Not shorts yet.” He said, “That’s true – you still have that.” SO PLEASE do NOT bring tights with shorts in over here. It’s already BEEN big in the UK and its not good looking in the least.
On another note, tho, I do love the selected outfit. I would just skip the tights. 
in addition: yes, I have been to London and have witnessed the fad first hand.
side note: I should apply to be a modstylist, cuz I’d probably be the only person not insisting on pairing tights with every single last outfit. I think that would actually make me unique around here……….

I think tights with shorts are adorable, I just can’t ever think of a good outfit to wear them with. The outfit above is soooo beautiful to me, it has all my favorite things! From the olive-y green cardigan to the bird and deer jewelry… I wish I owned every single one of those items. Good job!

Tights with shorts have been big here in NZ for a while, and I have to say I’ve never been a huge fan. Especially girls wearing them with sports shorts and heels *shudders*
I think they can be okay if done well, but I think it rarely happens. Love the outfit picked out though!
I disagree… love the tights shorts combo as long as it’s done with a bit of class, nothing too tight or baring, and as long as it’s on the right figure. And yes I’m British, but we’re not all from London….
plus, it’s so blooming cold in England right now that the only way to pull off shorts is with a layer underneath… blue tights is much more attractive than blue legs, at least that’s the tact I’m taking today! x
If the weather is cold, you shouldn’t be wearing shorts anyways. Save the shorts for the summer. And save them to show off the legs, not hide them!
But wearing shorts in summer is what you’re supposed to do! What’s the point in fashion if you can’t break some rules? If you can’t have fun?
I’ve been wearing shorts with tights for years. People here in the US always say I look cute, but wouldn’t wear it themselves, but barely any of them wear tights with anything anyway.
I never really liked shorts that much, all the ones I see are too short an revealing (therefore I can’t wear them to school- we have a dress code). But I can’t wait to try them like this! I’m sorry, but I love this trend!
Shorts and tights brings me back to my high school days in the early 90s. I liked the look and am glad that other seem to like it too. But it has been quite a while since I have done the look. I stopped wearing any kind of shorts about five years ago.
Oh, it’s definitely a do, and I’m not even British! I live in California, and it’s way more comfortable than jeans as well as perfect for the major temperature change from my air-conditioned classes and warm day. And I’m not the only one – a ton of girls at my school do it as well!
I have no problem with tights with shorts. Even if I don’t wear it, I still think it’s cute.
I don’t think tights underneath shorts are very flattering.
I hate tights with shorts! I think tights are to be worn with skirts and dresses only. even worse than tights with shorts are leggings with shorts. yuck.

I really haven’t worn shorts in my life because I’m not comfortable with me legs.. but give me a pair of tights and I’m ready to roll! so much more of a confidence boost and some form of comfort I guess…
As with any trend, I think there are times when it’s appropriate and times when it can look very tacky. See also: wearing leggings AS pants. (I think it works as long as you are wearing a top that mostly covers your butt. I can’t stand it when girls wear leggings with a t-shirt and their entire bum is totally on display, jiggles and all)
