“Style is everything and nothing at the same time. Mostly, it is everything.” – Charles Wright, poet
Many of us at ModCloth lead double lives. By day, we are busy ModCloth bees, but by night, we are DJs, artists, writers and more! As some of you already know, I spend most of my second life writing and reading poems. Luckily, my passions for fashion and poetry don’t have to be mutually exclusive; here are ten amazing poems inspired by clothing and style!
“Couture” by Mark Doty
“Wedding Dress” by Michael Waters
“Exchanging Hats” by Elizabeth BishopÂ
“Derrick Poem (The Lost World)” by Terrance Hayes
“The Plaid Dress” by Edna St. Vincent Millay
“The Hard Core of Beauty” by William Carlos Williams
“Ode to Clothing” by Pablo Neruda
“You Were Wearing” by Kenneth Koch
“The Black Lace Fan My Mother Gave Me” by Eavan Boland
“Bringing My Son to the Police Station to Be Fingerprinted” by Shoshauna Shy
Any of these poems strike your fancy? Have a stylish poem of your own? I’d love to know – leave me a comment!

So good, and while not necessarily positive, fashion related.
Oh wow, what a great top ten!
I think warning by jenny something or another (can’t remember) also has tremendous style
One Perfect Rose by Dorthy Parker
A single flow’r he sent me, since we met.
All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet–
One perfect rose.
I knew the language of the floweret;
“My fragile leaves,” it said, “his heart enclose.”
Love long has taken for his amulet
One perfect rose.
Why is it no one ever sent me yet
One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it’s always just my luck to get
One perfect rose.
roses are stylish right.. so are limos :P
These are great additions! I’m a big fan of Dorothy Parker. Amy Lowell’s “Patterns” is a perfect choice and Jenny Joseph’s “Warning” is well-known favorite! :)
i really liked the terrence hayes and kenneth koch poems. i’m going to have to read more of their work!
William Carlos Williams is one of my favorites…although not fashion-related, I love his “This is just to say”:
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
oh, wcw. what a goofball.
I LOVED ALL OF THEM!! i love fashion and all of those had exactly what i liked! great top ten!
