Lights Out for Earth Hour!

Mark your calendars for one the the biggest green events of the year! Next weekend, March 28th, be sure to SWITCH OFF YOUR LIGHTS for the annual observance of Earth Hour! At 8.30pm local time, wherever you live on the planet, make sure to switch off your lights in a show of solidarity against global warming. These 60 minutes of darkness are your vote for the Earth and will be used as proof that we care about climate change. The goal for 2009 is 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen where international governmental policies will be developed to take action against global warming!

Keep reading for the history of Earth Hour and more details on how you can help make a difference!

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million residences and business turned off their lights for one hour. By 2008, it became a global movement with 50 million people joining in the 60 minute darkness! Landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Colosseum in Rome, and the billboards of Times Square all switched off.  This year promises to be the biggest display yet, with a projected 1 billion lights darkened for the fight against global warming.

Saturday, March 28th, 8.30pm, for 60 minutes, simply switch off your lights, and be a part of the solution.

Join the movement to support Earth Hour, and receive tips on how to reduce your own carbon footprint. This is such an easy way to make a difference, and you can have fun with it! Host a candlelit party on March 28th, and ask your guests to bring a small donation to the World Wildlife Foundation, the sponsor of Earth Day. Maybe your local green coffeehouse or organic restaurant would be willing to host a dimly-lit evening. Or, head outside and look at the stars! Hop on your bike, ride around your town, and snap photos of the changed skyline. Take that dark hour to reflect about your impact on the world. You might find the lack of light…illuminating!

Let us know how you plan to spend your Earth Day on April 22!

Thanks for promoting Earth Hour! Another way you can recruit people to the cause is by creating a Earth Hour group on Commit21.com. Simply create a group about one action that you will commit to do for Earth Hour and recruit your friends, family, and co-workers to get involved in that action as well. When it comes to climate change, simple actions can make huge differences and Commit21 leverages social media to influence networks of friends, family, and co-workers.
