It’s no secret that the fashion industry is influenced by its surrounding society. Those of us in the Western hemisphere can usually detect style inspirations rooted in our own culture, but fashion trends are also influenced by cultures that aren’t always on our radar. This week, Vasil shows us how certain influences from his region of the world have trickled onto the runways in recent years.

Keep reading to learn more about Vasil’s culture and its impact on current fashion trends!

This week’s style inspirations are brought to you by Molly, our greenest ModCloth girl.

Australia’s Circular Quay is the perfect backdrop for this bold look I spotted on Garance Dore. It makes me miss sunny Australia, wandering around Sydney spotting fashionistas, having a drink at a pub in The Rocks…and, it makes me pine for those strappy white sandals and sheer leggings!

We are so excited to announce a recent collaboration with one of our favorite fashion blogs, Painfully Hip! ModCloth provided some of the items for their newest Design Collective shoot, Summers at the Ranch.  All of the shoots have been beautiful so far  (I looove the film noir moderne), but of course, this is my favorite! A sunny field, a friendly horse, and fabulous clothes–I want to spend a summer at this ranch (although I wouldn’t attempt horseback riding in the Thumbelina Dress)!

What do you guys think?

Just in the past few weeks, there have been plenty of opportunities for Pittsburgh-ers to hear the story of ModCloth! With articles in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review and Pittsburgh Post Gazette, as well as an interview with Susan on Sunday morning business talk show, Our Region’s Business, we’ve been the talk of the town!

In an attempt to be a ‘good recessionista’ and shop in her own closet, LL of Asian Cajuns reinvents this strapless boho dress with some crafty layering, a thrifted woven belt and vintage piano shawl. I’m inspired…can’t wait to get home and spring clean my own wardrobe!

Hello ModLovers! After a two-week hiatus to shop for new styles you’ll love to love this summer, Fashion Dictionary is back! Delightfully feminine and perfectly demure, eyelet patterning is this week’s topic.

Functional eyelets, or grommets, are small holes sometimes reinforced with plastic or metal for use in corset-making or other laced garments. In the decorative (and adorable) sense, eyelet refers to a lace-like, cut-out print with finished edges, as seen in trims and overlays for many styles here at ModCloth.

Our essential spring frock, The Breathless Dress, features a stunning eyelet overlay. It’s easily dressed up with flashy heels and gold accessories for cocktail parties or dressed down with a scarf and cardigan for picnics under your favorite elm tree. Does your wardrobe feature a healthy dose of eyelet? Thanks for reading and happy shopping!

Spotted on Owl and the Grapes, Emma’s adorable transitional outfit has me racing to find the perfect sleeveless cardi. It’s got all the good stuff I’m going to miss about my winter wardrobe (the dark, fall-like colors, the length, the layering) mixed with all the things I’m excited for as I drag out my spring and summer dresses (the flowing cuts and low neckline)!

Seen on good ol’ Wardrobe Remix, monikulus describes her look as “no effort.” I wish I could create an awesome outfit like this just by throwing things on in the morning!

You already know how much we love the 1980s. We thought it might be time to talk a little bit about that decade in which most of us actually grew up. We love the 90s!

  1. Grunge. The ultimate 90s trend that included flannel, chokers, piercings, tiny hair clips and more. Marc Jacobs is credited for bringing grunge to the runways with his 1992 collection for Perry Ellis.
  2. Neon. This trend is having a comeback!
  3. Sagging Jeans. The point here was to wear the oversized pants low enough that your awesome boxer shorts are exposed. Still rocking this trend? You’ll love this site.
  4. Scrunchies. This lovable hair accessory came in every color and every pattern imaginable. Many girls even made their own.
  5. “Belly” shirts. As the lovely Kelly Kapowski is showing off in the above photo, shirts or bra-tops that revealed one’s belly were considered super hot.
  6. The Blossom Hat. Who didn’t love Blossom’s quirky sense of style? Her upturned hat inspired teenage girls everywhere.
  7. Denim Cut-offs, preferably with lace details.
  8. Bodysuits. I distinctly remember my sister wearing a hot pink bodysuit with the shoulder cut-outs and thinking that she looked so cool.
  9. Overalls. Again, Kelly shows just how cool suspenders can look. Extra points for only bucking one strap and allowing the other to hang loose.
  10. Giant goose-down coats. The bigger, the better!

“That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” but what about a shoe? We think when it comes to fashionable footwear, a name can make a star out of any spring shoe, and with 28 Wishes granted and Something Sweet come and gone, it’s time for a new Name It and Win Contest!

This time, if you couldn’t guess, it’s all about the shoes. Our office has been filling up with boxes and boxes of incredible shoes, and we need help finding the perfect names for five pairs, in particular. Each morning this week at 10:30 a.m., we will reveal a new pair of shoes right here on the ModLife Blog that need your help getting a name. Write your submissions in the comments field of that post by midnight EST for a chance to win the shoes in your size.

The winners will be announced next Monday, May 4th, and they will receive the shoes they named, as well as the fame of naming their very own ModCloth shoe!

Today’s pair is the pretty brown oxfords in the image above. We think they would look awesome with the following:

Note: The rules have changed for this contest and contestants must now limit their entries to three-per-day.

outfit of the week

For my outfit of the week, I decided it was time to go a little out of my style comfort zone. I took the Lavender Luxury Tights and layered them over the ModCloth essential Black Peacock Feather Tights. I put on the amazing Postmodern Peep Toes, and then it was time for a little help from the best stylist ever, Vasil.

He added the Head in the Clouds Headband and the following upcoming items: The Guinevere Tunic, the Just Bead It Necklace in Black, and the yet-to-be named, incredibly fierce, black chain bag – and then he told me to jump!

So now I need some feedback. Do you like the look? Has Vasil styled me fierce? Please be kind!
