[NotCot had this wonderful idea to use extra reusable totes as throw pillows!]

  • For all those ladies out there interested in global politics, the location of this year’s G-20 summit has been announced. We’re so happy President Obama picked Pittsburgh!
  • Oh Michael Cera, you can do no wrong.  Check out the trailer for Paper Heart, which is coming out this August. This movie looks absolutely adorable!
  • A Day in the Life…of Abbey Road!

What We’re Into:

Sari: Spaced. This late 90’s BBC comedy, created by and starring Simon Pegg, is loaded with pop culture references (including lots of sci-fi/horror-style film work), witty dialogue, and even “will they or won’t they” romance (a la The Office: Season 1). The only con:  It’s only two seasons long! I dare you to not fall in love with Simon Pegg after watching this series.

Molly: I’ve been releasing my inner abstract artist and splatter-painting the clean way on JacksonPollock.org. It’s really addictive, so be warned…and Get Pollocked!

It’s just like real life when you’re standing dumbstruck in front of your closet with five minutes before you have to be out the door, albeit slightly less panicked. Wedding Style Tip: Remember to consider the tone and location of the wedding when you’re choosing an outfit. For a country club or evening reception, something like Tux Goes Lux Dress paired with an evening bag is a good pick, but for a daytime affair, the more casual, but still stunning Reflection Pool Dress, paired with vibrant wedges is a better choice. Which look do you like best?

[Image above:  Skinny laMinx tea towels-Herds in Grey, I Wish We Had IKEA]

Heather Moore designs and sells simple printed fabric available by the metre and in readymade goods, from tea towels to cushion covers,  in her Etsy shop, Skinny laMinx . I especially love her IKEA-themed tea towel, which is a wishlist/love letter to IKEA composed with line drawings, product names and prices.  Fun prints like these make chores and living greener a little more fun. Moore’s Scandinavian-style housewares suit any room in the house while her cut fabric invites all crafters to create something uniquely their own.

Fringe Benefits Earrings

Sometimes it’s all in the details, and right now I am totally loving these simple yet statement-y earrings.  I think they’ll look equally good worn for a night out on the town or just paired with a simple tee, jeans & sandals for a glamorously lazy afternoon.

What’s your favorite new item this week?

Holy dolman sleeves, batwing! Get it? Well, you will after this week’s Fashion Dictionary post on dolman sleeves! They’re making a comeback in a big way, and I couldn’t be happier. Dolman sleeves (aka batwing sleeves, a variation of the magyar sleeve) are defined as sleeves fitted at the wrist and cut with a deep armhole so that it somewhat resembles a cape from the back (think sugar glider). What you’ll most often behold  on our site is a short version of the cut, as seen on our Double Chocolate Tunic.

It’s comfy, cute, and popular to boot! Do you have any dolman sleeves hanging in your well-established closet? How do you style them? Let me know! Thanks for reading, and happy shopping!

By guest blogger, Julianne:

I am always torn when thrifting as to what strikes me more: vintage clothing or mod decor…  However, having recently stumbled upon the 500,000 square foot Antique Mall in Ohio, I was a bit overwhelmed to say the least!  Amazingly, amidst the madness of what looked like a maze of mod decor and clothing, my purchase ended up being one of the first pieces that caught my eye walking in the door.

What: Pea Green Porcelain Equestrian (Chess-Piece-Inspired?) Lamp.  It’s missing the hardware for a lampshade, but it works!  Like the style?  You’ll love our Unicorn Princess Heels.

Where: Medina Antique Mall

How Much: $20.00

When I Use It: In my bedroom on just about any occasion when I’m in need of light that is not too bright!  I purchased this lamp knowing it was missing the piece to hold a lampshade, but this only fed my inner creative-ist to think outside the box.  I didn’t want to cover up any part of the awesome statue itself, so I opted instead to top it off with a unique bulb of low wattage.  This way, it is dim enough to shine and not too bright to blind any onlookers.

Shopping Tips: Be careful when purchasing vintage appliances & electronics!  This one had a very old plug at the end of the cord with exposed wire (which I didn’t realize) until I plugged it in, sparks flew, and the kitchen’s circuit broke.  Double check any wires, and with a quick trip to the hardware store, this problem was a handy fix.

Now I need your help!  My last step is to decide on a bulb, and so far I am still in need of more opinions…  I found two very different bulbs to top it off with, but each are very unique in its own way!  Which do you think would be the best bulb of choice?  Would you consider dropping your lampshade in the future to let your own stylish lamp shine?

You have to love a fashion blog that gives you  just as much inspiration from literary references as it does from the fabulous outfits. Audrey Leighton’s blog, “Frassy,” is integrated with quotes from Wordsworth, Shakespeare, and Kerouac, and her outfits are integrated with awesome trends like suspenders, thrifted blazers, and ripped leggings. She also completely inspired me to wear my hair in a high bun tomorrow!

Last month, ModCloth was honored to sponsor the very cool, “Design Your Dream Prom” Contest over at Glogster, a site where users can create virtual posters.  The contest ran through May 13th, but now we’re very excited to announce some of the winners!

Taking the grand prize of $250 and telling us a story was “thistleflute” with the very cute  “Once Upon a Vespa in the Rain!”

See the runners up!

I’m a big fan of Jessica Schroeder’s daily outfits  post, What I Wore! (How does she have a seemingly endless supply of cute, strappy sandals?!) I was especially envious of this outfit. The wildly colorful jacket and chunky bracelet prove that you can evoke and celebrate spring without pastels or florals.

Everyone, I’d like you to meet the newest addition to my family. He might be kind of ugly, smell a bit, and attract worms, but I love him just the same. So, let me introduce you all to the Earth Machine, my brand new, backyard composting bin! Inspired by all of ModCloth’s Earth Day activities, my hubbie and I decided to take one of the Pennsylvania Resource Council’s backyard composting classes. Included in our sign-up fee was a very informative power-point, the opportunity to ask Penn State University Master Gardeners a ton of questions, and this composting-making monster. Goodbye banana peels and carrot tops, and hello luscious compost!

To find out how this monster works, why compost is awesome, and how you can start composting, keep reading… Read the rest of this entry »

  1. Visit an amusement park or water park. In Pittsburgh, we’re lucky to have great parks like Sandcastle and Kennywood (the amusement park where Adventureland was filmed)!
  2. Play Monster Golf. We love this blacklight indoor golf course – you can even get married there!
  3. Check out a Museum or  Conservatory, like Phipps!
  4. Visit a Local Vineyard or Winery. If you’re lucky enough to live near Napa Valley, then this is a no-brainer. However, there are a lot of great wineries all over the country, even in our own Pennsylvania!
  5. Visit the Zoo or Aquarium. Last year, I got the chance to explore the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest aquarium!
  6. Take Pictures. Take advantage of that daylight and take some outfit pics…then post them on our Style Exchange!
  7. Lounge in the Pool, like our furry friend in the picture above.
  8. Fly a Kite. There have been incredible innovations in the world of kites. Want proof? Check out the Virtual Kite Zoo.
  9. Catch a matinee at your local theatre. It’s so much cheaper!
  10. Clean Your Closet and donate what you don’t need to your local Goodwill.

By Morgan McVeagh

Over the past year, I’ve spent nearly every Saturday morning waking up to the sound of my mom’s voice. “You have 15 minutes”, my mom warns, “it’s time for estate sales.” This weekend was no different. 7:30 came, and like clockwork, my parents were at the front door. Our plan was mapped out and off we were to 5 of our favorite Pittsburgh neighborhoods.

Read more about this weekend’s adventure.

Cinders, the mysophobic pig: Photo courtesy of dailymail.co.uk

Written by guest blogger,  Rachel Savorelli

We all have our fears. Acrophobia (fear of heights), arachnophobia (fear of spiders), and spectrophobia (fear of ghosts), are just a few common fears that people have.

Some fears may be a bit more odd, serious, or even incompatible! While one may think that mysophobia (fear of dirt), would be likened towards someone perhaps more uppity or pristine, for our latest Cute Find, it’s one pig’s incongruent oohs and aahs that made him a stylish attraction. Cinders, a proper British pig, is apparently a mysophobic! In order to allow Cinders to explore and dig like the rest of the piglets, her owner fashioned her a pair of boots! Stylish and functional! Who’s afraid of a little mud?
