Tower, this is Unisex-y requesting a second flyby to bring you fashion fit for any sky-soaring sartorialist, regardless of gender. This week’s featured ModCloth item is the Maverick Sunglasses. Roger that!

Continue reading to find out how we styled these sunglasses for a both a man and a woman.

Our purpose is to teach the lost art of unisex styling and to insure that the men and women who care about ModCloth clothing are the best fashion pilots in the world. We hope to succeed by explaining how we’ve taken the simple aviator style of the Maverick Sunglasses and crafted two outfits out of this item that give the greenlight for a male or a female to ‘rocket’, regardless of ability to operate a plane.

The inspiration for my look comes from Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick, in the movie “Top Gun” when he’s off duty and cruising around the naval base on his motorcycle. I took his namesake sunglasses and combined them with a black leather biker jacket, a nude colored deep V-neck T-shirt, blue jeans, and cowboy boots. And in place of dog tags, I elected to go with the more on-trend look of a charm necklace.

For my wingwoman, Amy, we assembled a similar look but took it slightly more military-formal by assigning the Battalion Jacket in Black as the Maverick Sunglasses‘ co-pilot. To keep the outfit from riding into the danger zone of becoming too pro forma, though, we’ve cooled the jets of the jacket with the casual Best Friend Tank in Putty and Mighty Mighty Pants, then rounded out the ensemble with the appropriately named Slipstream Wedges. We kept the flight theme going by accessorizing with the winged City of Angels Ring, then proudly displayed around her neck the Tsarina Necklace with its six jeweled ornaments that serve as insignia for Amy’s high-ranking refinement. Lastly, we rock n’ rolled her up a bit with the Lita Clutch in Fender, in which she can slip her sunglasses when she soars indoors.

Do you have any suggestions as to which ModCloth items may fit the Unisex-y bill? Are there ModCloth items that our gentlemen friends and readers are already wearing? Let us know!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE her jacket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wanted it soooo bad, esp. since it looks like a tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson :)
And the aviators also totally rock! (Also something MJ wore ^-^) But sadly I can’t wear them unless I get contacts…grrr

Ha ha my cousin got her first pair of aviators while we were in Key West last week. All week long we looked for people rockin’ the aviators!
By the way, VegetarianGirl21, you should try contacts. They’re not that bad. You hardly notice they’re there. I finally got them in the spring and now I get to wear sunglasses galore!

I totally see both the Michael Jackson and Sgt. Pepper references. The jacket is very much something the Beatles could have worn in the Lonely Hearts Club band, while the ensemble as a whole reminds me of Michael Jackson’s look in the mid-80’s (just Google “Michael Jackson Aviators” and you’ll see what I mean).

    Thanks for the comments!

The jacket reminds me of (all of the above, NubbyTwiglet) and marching band, since I was in one for over ten years and had to wear jackets like this on a regular occasion!

    xx.
