England Thrift-land

Who: Amy Cockcroft, ModCloth fashion writing intern

What: Vintage dress, clock necklace

Where: The dress was from Retro Rehab in Manchester, England. It’s such a gorgeous little shop and part of the thriving Northern Quarter. The good people there don’t sell items exactly as they find them. Instead, they rework the items that still have slight ‘dated in a bad way’ characteristics then make them into totally unique and gorgeous vintage items by adding pockets, shortening lengths, etc. I totally fell in love with the dress when I found it, and damn, it was one of those days when thrift shopping wasn’t on the agenda at all. The clock necklace is from a flea market out on the coast in Newcastle, England, where I’m at University. It is a little cheesy with ‘Ireland’ written in it, and it cost more to put the battery in than the necklace cost in the first place. But I love it. My bag was from a vintage shop called ‘Retro’ in Newcastle and was a gift from some of my university friends from a past birthday.

How Much: Speaking in pounds: The dress was £20. The necklace was £3.50

When I use it: I love this dress because  it’s perfect for a relaxed, yet formal, evening out. I wore it out on a date with my boyfriend a few weeks ago, and my usual complex about eating too much and getting a ‘belly on’ was totally dispelled because it’s so comfy! I team the accessories with most of my outfits, particularly when they need a vintage boost.

Shopping Tips: Don’t feel like you’ve got to scour the racks too excessively. If something that you really want or a print that is totally awesome is there, then it’ll jump out at you. I relish in a vintage find as much as any other girl, but I totally find it overwhelming to have too much choice!

This is completely unrelated to this post, but I just wanted to throw out a suggestion – on the Vintage page, could there possibly be a Sort option to see which items are sold and which aren’t? Although there aren’t too many items, I’m always afraid I’ll miss something.
