Next week, ModCloth will be unveiling a fun new contest (hint hint: it incorporates the autumn-friendly activity of pumpkin carving!). We can’t give way all the details now, but we can say that the contest will include a donation to an animal charity and we want you to help us decide which charity the proceeds will go to! We’ve picked a local charity, a national charity, and Winston insisted we also include a pug charity. The three choices are the Washington Area Humane Society, the ASPCA, and the DFW Pug Rescue Club. Please read about the three organizations below and cast your vote using the poll to your left.
Obviously all three organizations are very deserving, but we can only choose one for this contest. However if any of these organizations find a special place in your heart, please consider independently donating supplies or money, or consider volunteering at your own local humane society or animal rescue organization! Your time is valuable too, and most of these organizations are always looking for a good volunteer.
Here’s some more information about the three charities:
Washington Area Humane Society:
The Washington Area Humane Society is a no-kill shelter, located in Washington County, just outside of Pittsburgh. They are funded solely by private contributions, take in more than 4,000 animals annually, and investigate 700 cases of abuse. Dedicated employees care for the dogs, cats, and rabbits 7 days a week, and they can only afford to pay them a little more than minimum wage. They receive no funding from the county and only a few of the municipalities contribute. Many people bring food, cat litter, and supplies, but they need monetary donations to meet monthly expenses.
ASPCA-American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals:
The ASPCA is a privately funded 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit and they were the first humane society to be established in North America. Today, it’s one of the largest in the world. The ASPCA is headquartered in New York City, but has programs that extend across the country. Incorporated in 1866, they were the first humane organization that was granted the legal ability to investigate and make arrests for crimes against animals. Their mission is”to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States,” providing leadership in three key areas: resources for pet parents, positive outcomes for at-risk animals, and serving victims of animal cruelty.
DFW Pug Rescue Club Inc. is a non-stock non-profit organization for the rescue, care, and placement of unwanted, mistreated, or homeless pugs in Texas. It’s the largest pug rescue organization in the United States. They have rescued and placed over 3,800 pugs and rescue approximately 10 pugs a week. Since they rescue ALL pugs, regardless of age or medical condition, they average approximately $100,00 a year in veterinary expenses. 100% of all donations are used to pay for veterinary care. DFWPRC is an all-volunteer oranization and they do not have a staging area to hold their pugs, so they depend on the generosity of their volunteers to provide foster homes for the pugs until they find permanent homes.

3 loves
Is the contest restricted to folks in the US? Could there be an international option as well?
oh thank you thank you for donating to one of these charities. You guys are amazing!!
i vote for the washington area humane society one seems like they would need the money the most
My vote is for DFW Pug Rescue Club!! LOVE THE PUGS!!
Washington Area Humane Society for sure, they survive off private contributions and need help! support local shelters :)
I also vote for the Washington Area Humane Society.
The ASPCA all the way! Though if PETA had been a choice, I’d be all over that.
Washington Humane Society!
Pug Rescue
I’ve been an ASPCA supporter for a long time so I’ve got to vote for them!
Washington Humane Society!!!
Washington Humane Society! They take care of animals, find them homes if they can, and try to stop animal cruelty..they do it all….plus they are no-kill.
Washington Humane Society, but they all sound like great charities!
Washington Area Humane Society, though they are all worthy.
Washington Humane Society!
Almost too hard to choose, I pick the Washington Humane Society.
ASPCA-American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals:
I vote for the ASPCA. They’re a country-wide organization who does a lot of good and is always under funded. Not only do they save abused & neglected pets giving them a 2nd chance for a forever home but they also educate the community.
Washington Area Humane Society
Washington Humane Society gets my vote
Washington Area Humane Society!
I’m sure they are all great…. but being from a different Washington…. I love that the ASPCA can help across the nation!
Washington Area Human Society :)
Washington Area Human Society :)
Washington Area Humane Society. They sound like a good group.
Also? WAHS is such a good acronym. “Wah, wah! poor kittehs can haz some moneh, plz?”
Definately the Washington Area Humane Society. They seem very caring and they need it badly.
Washington Area Humane Society
ASPCA!
ASPCA!!
The Washington Area Humane Society. They sound like people really trying to make a difference!
I vote for the washinton area humane society. It sounds like they probably need the most help.
Washington Area Humane Society. It sounds like they need the money the most, and they are working for a really good cause (not that any of the causes aren’t).
Washington Area Humane Society!
Washington Area Humane Society!
Washington Area Humane Society gets my vote.
Washington Area Humane Society gets my vote!
Washington Area Humane Society. Definitely.
I vote for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
I’m all for the Washington Area Humane Society. I worked with the Animal Defense League, another no-kill shelter, and those kinds of places could really use the extra help!
I just adopted a dog from the ASPCA here in Houston, TX. The people there were very friendly and helpful and all the animals were in good health, but there was so much more than these animals needed that they couldn’t have because of the lack of funding and volunteers. (Baths, for example.) I think the ASPCA should get the money because they’re a loving and committed organization with a real need and history of doing their job well.
Washington Area Humane Society, as a no-kill shelter they could probably use as much money as they can get!
DFW Pug Rescue Club. They have all of those veterinary bills to pay and seem like they could really use the extra money!
All of them equally deserve it, so it’s a difficult choice, but my vote goes for Washington Area Humane Society. :)
Washington Area Humane Society:
ASPCA-American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
In my town i’ve worked with problems with animals that suffered abuse. It’s horrible what people can do to them.
I voted for the ASPCA, but I think I’m going to have to convince my husband we NEED a rescue pug!!!
ASPCA-American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Washington Area Humane Society :D
WASHINGTON AREA HUMANE SOCIETY!
Almost too hard to choose but I’m going with Washington Area Humane Society. I’m so for no-kill shelters!
I vote for the Washington Area humane society.
I am also surprised by the vast amounts of pugs there are in need of rescuing in texas.
Washington Area Humane Society.
one more for WAHS
DFW Pug Rescue Club
Washington Area Humane Society! I support of the ASPCA with my own $ and I know others do too, so sometimes it’s nice to give to the smaller organizations that aren’t as well known.
Washington Area Humane Society. When my family decided to get a dog, we bought him from a no kill shelter and the people there were so greatful to give him to a good home! I also think they could use the donations!
Washington Area Humane Society
(I love them all though…)
All such great causes-can’t we help all the pooches out!?
ASPCA
- have abilty to work throughout the nation – helping animals all over
Washington Area Humane Society. Don’t get me wrong, I adore pugs, and am against cruelty to animals, but I see WAHS covering the most bases at the moment! Plus, like someone else pointed out, great acronym.
I heart the ASPCA (I don’t know about the other two)!
ASPCA
ASPCA.
World Wildlife Fund!
Washington Humane Society
The Washington Area Humane Society! No-kill shelters are rare enough – they need all the support they can get!
Washington Area Humane Society!
Washington Humane Society.
Washington Area Humane Society
WAHS, definitely. The seem like they really need it.
Washington Area Human Society!
Washington Area Human Society…though they all deserve it, gotta support those no kill shelters!
Washington!!
Washington Area Humane Society. I think animal shelters are in a pretty tough spot with this economy and I appreciate the ones that maintain their no-kill policy, despite the hard times.
Washington Area Humane Society! I loved their website. It seems like they have a lot to offer in the way of their speaker series and fur ball.
Washington Area Humane Society. We should encourage and support the no kill shelter concept.
Washington Area Humane Society. I believe they really need it and they’ll make a good use of it.
All of them deserve the money, but I’d have to vote for the Washington Area Humane Society.
I am a huge animals rights activist. I dispise animal testing for cosemetics and dog fighting and dog races! So i want ASPCA to get the donation.
washington humane. next time check out the animal legal defense fund
Gosh…that’s hard…I think I’ll go for the pug rescue simply because I think it is really important for there to be specific organizations that deal with pure bred breeds, since they seem to be commonly unwanted, and rescue centers also allow people to adopt a breed they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford.
WAHS!
WAHS! I know what it’s like to work in a shelter like that, I commend the people at WAHS and their excellent work!
Washington Area Humane Society!
ASPCA for their far reach to areas across America and their endless pursuit to stop abuse and provide tools for humane treatment of animals. Here is Texas they work with our no kills shelters. Kudos to all three for their strength and efforts but by supporting ASPCA I can reach a distance.
DFW Pug Rescue Club!!! I think they need an extra money!!! but all of the organizations that help animals need our help and donations!! :)
ASPCA
DFW Pug Rescue Club :)
ASPCA – been a supporter for a long time and I’d like to put harsher punishments through legislative for cruelity to animals.
Washington Area Humane Society!
can we choose all of them?
i will have to go to wahs.
WAHS. The ASPCA chooses to spend their money getting celebrities and making commercials. I under stand the need to raise awareness, but they have so many commercials that its overkill. The Pug Rescue Club is a great organization, but I feel like WAHS is open to all breeds and species.
Definately the Washington Area Humane Society. They do seem like they could use the help the most, even though each one is very deserving.
Washington Area Humane Society!
Washington Area Humane Society.
I think all do great work but I have to go with the ASPCA
DFW Pug Rescue Club, it’s unique and oddly necessary- pugs are too cute. <3
Also, they are probably the least likely of the three to receive funding, therefore I say donate to the underdog!! (Har har)
Washington Area Humane Society!
My boyfriends kitties came from Washington Area Humane Society as well as my kitty. They really could use more money.
All of them please! But if I must choose, then WAHS.
Washington Area Humane Society
ASPCA!!
aspca!!!
Washington Area Humane Society area, for sure.
Aspca all the way!!!!!
ASPCA, I have donated to them many times and I am a supporter of them.
Washington Area Humane Society. My top choice would always have to be a no-kill shelter.
WAHS all the way!!
They do so much with what little resorces they have. No kill shelter with very dedicated staff and volunteer group.
You can see the animals at my website.
As someone who has personally volunteered at the Washington Area Humane Society, I sincerely hope people will vote for them. This is a shelter that truly can use the help!! They do an outstanding job with the resources they currently have, but they could certainly benefit from winning this contest. Please consider voting for them!!! The dogs and cats say thanks.
I would vote for the Washington Area Humane Society as it seems they would need it the most.
The Washington Area Humane Society saved my life. Although I has some “issues”, they kept me alive and happy for over a year until I found a loving forever home. WAHS rocks at my house!
my vote is also for the Washington Area Humane Society! whichever wins, thank you for donating to a great cause!
Washington Area Humane Society
the volunteers work very hard for the animals.
I vote for DFW Pug Rescue! They do the best work for pugs in the whole USA!
My vote is for the Washington Area Humane Society! Thank you for including them in this contest.
My husband volunteers with Bunny Magic, a no-kill rabbit shelter and wildlife Rehab in MD-VA-DC. Please consider them for future promos, or for your rabbit adoption needs. http://www.BunnyMagic.org
“You’re nobody until some bunny loves you!”
ASPCA
Why no PETA? :(
