Who says you shouldn’t play with your food?
Call it Faux Food Fever. Foodies everywhere are toying with their food, giving familiar foods new faces by disguising them as other dishes. Hands down, we’re talking about the cleverest culinary micro-trend around. With a little food coloring, pound cake and frosting become faux grilled cheese sandwiches, while sugary breadsticks and jam can front as fraudulent french fries. These mischievous masterpieces put wax fruits and the mystery meats of our elementary school cafeterias to shame, and have us tickled pink. After all, what’s craftier than food masquerading as… well, food?
Over the weekend, we sampled the web so we could serve you the tastiest tricksters out there. Read on for more dishes that will make you do a double-take!

If you’re in the mood for Japanese, this sushi from Not Martha hits the sweet spot! Just be prepared for some fishy flavors. Instead of seaweed, fish, and rice, expect Fruit Roll-Ups, Swedish Fish, and Hostess Donettes. But if you’re craving Chinese, you’ll go nuts over this Cashew Chicken Stir-fry. The cashews are the only truth-tellers in this colorful dish, which otherwise contains dried pineapple and apple chunks, sunflower seeds, and Fruit Roll-Ups.

Peaches just got a lot sweeter, thanks to these Little Peach Cakes from Big Red Kitchen! These plump poseurs are pieced together from yellow cake mix, sugar, and food coloring, and are topped with cinnamon stick and peppermint leaf stems. But if you don’t have ball pans in your pantry, use orange peels and make Jell-O fruit! Making these wobbly wedges can be tricky, but Not Martha provides a great tutorial on how to make this devilishly deceptive dessert.
So watch out, kitchen! We may not have the heart to make a Fauxberry Pie (as fervent cake lovers, that just seems too cruel), but we definitely see Little Peach Cakes and faux fries in our future! What about you?

I was at a restaurant in Long Beach, Long Island, that served faux sushi as dessert. It was Rice Krispies and Gummies, wrapped as fake sushi rolls. The kids at another table got them. It was so cute!
