For the past six years, creative residents throughout Philadelphia have found a cure for the January mid winter slump, which for many businesses is also the beginning of the slowest time of the year. The challenge is called Fun-A-Day, and it’s a month long art project that occurs every year!
The concept is quite simple, “to pick a project to do every day for the month of January, that you can document in some way, to motivate yourself to stay creative and stoked for the coldest and biggest bummer month of the year”. Following the month of January, in late February/early March, an art show is held in each respective city (this will be Pittsburgh’s third year!) to document the creative ventures of those who participated!
“Last year projects ranged from hand stitching a quilt a bit everyday, to eating a new snack food a day and writing a haiku about it, making a new batch of muffins a day, writing a letter a day (in various forms), learning how to do a new origami project a day, visiting a new Pittsburgh place, and so much more!” (artclash.com)
Do you want to participate, but Fun-A-Day doesn’t exist in your city yet? Visit the founders’ website, The Artclash! Collective, and contact them to bring this event to your hometown.
Are you participating this year? Do you have any good ideas that you think would be great for this, but don’t think you’ll have the time? (I have my idea, but am keeping it confidential, so that it’s a surprise!)

2 loves
I’m gonna do it! Kinda silly, but I’ve been meaning to document my collection of vintage dresses – so I thought I’d take photos of one every day.
Unfortunately I’m away from home until Jan. 5, so I’m going to get a late start. :(
Love this! I’m planning something related… making a big ole long list of a 100+ things I want to do this year, from the small (giving a friend’s daughter my book) to the big and scary (learning to sew, learning ASL). Going to try to do one thing every few days. Happy New Year!
I’m doing it this year in Philly! I usually forget about it, so I’m glad you mentioned it again. I’ll be making a freehand embroidery on a 4×4 piece of felt every day. No theme, just whatever I’m feeling each day.
