The Hat that Makes the Woman

When a bare-headed John F. Kennedy was sworn into office on January 20, 1961, fashion was changed forever. Sounds silly, right? Well, its true. JFK was the first president to forgo headwear during his inauguration. In a day and age when a gent hardly left the house without a hat, this was big news. Hats, once an everyday necessity, were suddenly thrown out on their keisters, declaimed as anti-progressive.

Though hats are still worn today, their uncanny ability to make an outfit whole is often overlooked. The glamorous girl seen above, however, has recaptured the old integral air of hat in this seamless outfit. She has masterfully pulled together a palate of lush earth tones, playing off feminine flair with her flared skirt and masculine minutiae with her boyish blazer. Though wholly well arranged, this ensemble would lack its  enigmatic edge without the wide-brimmed floppy hat.

Do you agree? Would the outfit have the same oomph without the hat?

The outfit itself is capricious…it seems as if it was just thrown on and looked fabulous. Then she added the hat, which I agree, does make the whole piece come together. Review: whimsically lovely.

I love that outfit, and you’re right the hat totally tops it off.

I would love to be a hat person. Sadly, I am not, and never will be. There is not a hat in the world that looks good on me, and I hate having hat hair.

I’ll stick to cute headbands and clips, I guess.

Ooo, I love the earthy green tones – my favorite color! And the booties are a sassy touch.

But, I have to sadly side with Sydney. I think this girl looks extraordinary in her ensemble, but I know that I can’t pull off a hat like that. Ladies that can work a hat – I envy you!

She would still look great without the hat. But the hat sure does add a certain je ne sais quoi! I love it.
