Wondering how our new, illustrated stylebook was made? We swung by ModCloth graphic designer and stylebook illustrator Natalie’s desk to find out!
What were the inspirations behind this stylebook?
As one of the ModCloth graphic designers, I’ve always tried to include handmade elements in the layouts I create. I’ve developed an illustration style that I feel represents ModCloth well, and we just went from there! I’ve always been inspired by colors, patterns, and strong line art.
Could you walk us through the process of creating a stylebook like this?
Well, the photography had to be taken first. Then working with the photos, I created line drawings. Some of the clothes were created and cut out separately. Each piece was then scanned in and put together on the computer. The model’s skin, lips and hair were filled with color in Photoshop. The layouts were created, and then were shipped over to Brian, one of our User Experience designers, so he could work his coding magic.

Did the nature of “Visceral Style” influence the styling of the outfits?
Because the illustrations were taken from photographs in order to stay consistent with the garments, the model was styled in accordance with what would translate well as an illustration as well as an outfit. Details and patterns were important. As well as good hair! The photographer shot the model in a very simple white space layout with a heavy shadow.
Is that your handwriting on the stylebook?
Oh, heck no! If I used my handwriting, you would know, because it’s awful! We hired another artist, Kristine Osbourne, to do the handwriting.
Let’s talk time. How long did it take you and Brian to do all this?
It took me around eight days to make the illustrations, and Brian took three or four days to finish the animations. Hopefully all our hard work paid off, and you all enjoyed the illustrated version of a ModCloth outfit!
