Julie, of the blog Orchid Grey, has the tagline, “big hair small wallet,” which is echoed across her blog in the photos of her awesome hair and the outfits she creates on a budget. She has a way of looking glamorous even when she’s sporting sneakers (maybe it’s the hair), mixing laid-back girl-next-door with old-school screen siren. She’s a dynamic person, working a day job as an Admissions Counselor and spending her free time perfecting her photography skills and blogging.
But I don’t want to give everything about her away! So, read our interview with her, take a peek at some of her favorite ModCloth finds, and fall in love with her namesake dress.
Is there a certain era that influences your style?
I like a little bit of everything, but I’m primarily influenced by the 1950′s and 1960′s. I love the silhouettes. The nipped waists and full skirts of the ’50′s and mini-dresses of the ’60′s, those styles just seem to end up in my closet no matter what.
Favorite style icon?
There are so many fabulous women that I’m inspired by, it changes constantly! To name just a few of the more famous ones: Marianne Faithfull, young Dolly Parton, Françoise Hardy, Debbie Harry, and Brigitte Bardot (that hair!).
If you could live on the set of any movie, or in the pages of a book, what would it be?
John Water’s Cry-Baby would be fantastic, all rock n’ roll, kitten heels, and tight skirts… For books, I would love to live in the Chronicles of Narnia. I always wished my closet opened up into a world filled with talking animals and adventure.
Do you blog full-time or do you have a day job?
I wish blogging was my full-time job, but a girl’s gotta pay the bills! Aside from blogging, I am a full-time Admissions Counselor for a small, independent, fine-arts college. I also do some freelance photography, mostly for the college, documenting student life and archiving the work being created at the school.

What style blogs do you follow?
I’m a little hyper-active when it comes to reading blogs, I tend to skip pretty fast from one to another. I love all the ladies of the Delightful Dozen of course (Hi girls!), plus Lulu Letty, Keiko Lynn, Kennedy Holmes, to name just a few current favorites.
When you’re not blogging, what are your other hobbies?
Aside from blogging, I also enjoy snowboarding, collecting old bicycles, sewing, cat-snuggling, and — probably the biggest hobby of them all — excessive amounts of thrift shopping with my boyfriend! I am also involved in a local arts collective that holds group exhibitions in alternative gallery spaces in our area. Art is a big part of my everyday life.
What are your dreams for the future?
Within the next five years I would like to get my masters degree, maybe in Fashion Studies. Until then, I am focusing on my blog and exploring ways to steer my career in a fashion-related direction. I would also love to travel and explore as much as possible, and work on building my photography portfolio.
And, last but not least — if you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and what would you eat?
Andy Warhol the millisecond before he hit it big. We would eat a variety of treats while he illustrated likenesses of my cats and shared his perspective on the rise of fashion bloggers in celebrity culture.
