I was NOT in the mood to go out when my boyfriend dragged me to a concert a few weeks ago. It’d been a long day and all I wanted was the couch. But when Joy Ike took the stage to open that show, my mood instantly lightened.
This talented Pittsburgh singer/songwriter/pianist has drawn comparisons to the likes of India.Arie and Regina Spektor, and is full of vivacious charm. Blending pop, soul, and jazz, Ike is an admirer of music that can paint a picture. “If I can listen to a song and see the plot being acted out like a movie, I’m totally sold,” Ike says. Her own lyrics weave deep narratives that climax into fervent revelations which can captivate a room.
Her new album Rumors, due out today, “is all about ‘talk’.” The theme runs throughout the album, commenting on today’s opinion-saturated culture. “Everyone’s got their own YouTube channel, their own blog, their own website,” Ike says. “Yes, everyone’s opinion is important — but after reading 500 different opinions, it’s easy to get confused. It’s easy to become indecisive and decide that you should just believe everything because it’s easier than just believing something – one thing. I think that’s a cop-out and gets us off the hook.”
