Stuff We Miss: Anthropomorphic Cartoon Heroes

Recently, my friend wrote in an e-mail that ModCloth was “ridiculously ‘jawesome!’” Where did this term originate? If you know the nostalgic roots of “jawesome,” then you’re one ‘shark’ individual. It was coined by a troupe of crime-fighting half-man/half-sharks from the mid-Nineties TV series Street Sharks!

Similar to how boy bands took over the radiowaves in the ’90s, cartoons of that decade were all about anthropomorphic action heroes. Other than Street Sharks, can you guess which other animated animal heroes we miss?

Darkwing Duck
The only thing dangerous about this show is its insanely catchy theme song; don’t be surprised if you find yourself breaking out soulful bursts of “Darkwing Duck” in public!

Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures
Proof that big things come in little packages (dressed in a yellow bodysuit with a red cape)!

Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers
True heroes, Chip & Dale rescued many an afternoon of my childhood!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
You didn’t think we’d leave TMNT out of the mix, did you?

That’s my list! Who would top your list of heroic animal ‘toons?

I love these shows! And I have a vague memory of Pizza Cats? Pizza-loving armored cats fighting evil? Oh and the original Chipmunks (not the horrible new one)!

Oh, man! I thought my friends and I were the only ones who used the word, ‘jawesome’! I’m so glad it’s catching on!

    Great post, Julie!

    haha, THIS is jawesome!
I remember some show about these two cats who were mechanics or something… the planes or cars or whatever they worked on turned into crime fighting machines! I think it was called Swat Kats

Omg, yes, Street Sharks and Darkwing Duck!

Another one that pops into my mind (despite never having really watched an episode) was Biker Mice from Mars! In retrospect, it’s pretty amazing someone came up with that…rofl!

Haha, you can’t leave out Thundercats! And Biker Mice from Mars is a personal favorite. And carebears!

Ok, yea. For a minute there I *WAS* scared you’d forgotten TMNT!

There were also the Gummy Bears! (bouncing here and there and everywhere!) They were always on at the same time as Chip And Dale and it was the BIGGEST childhood dilemma for me!

how could you forget biker mice form mars?! This is so weird. My sister and I just went on a trip down memory lane a few weeks ago looking up old cartoon intros. <3

People who don’t know where jawesome originated should be educated by watching all seasons of Street Sharks ever made. Consecutively.

    Anything less is a crime.

I was always a big fan of Talespin – Baloo from The Jungle Book fighting against a band of air pirates led by Don Karnage. Also, the animated Batman series was really good. And we can’t leave out Animaniacs and Tiny Toons Adventures!

Oh, Rescue Rangers, how I loved thee. My sisters and I always fought over who would be Gadget when we played! You’ve gotta love Duck Tales (a-WOO-ooo!) and Gummy Bears (bouncin’ here and there and everywhere!)
