Congratulations to readers Amanda, Katie, Alyssa, Jenn, and Katherine! Each of them won a copy of our September Book of the Month, the graphic memoir Drinking at the Movies by Julia Wertz. Drinking at the Movies isn’t your typical coming of age story. Sure, there’s a daunting move across the country, the impulse to escape one’s hometown for New York City, and plenty of bad jobs (those unwilling to clean up wayward urine need not apply), but Wertz’s dry, self-deprecating graphic memoir amusingly narrates the journey toward adulthood — that is, if you ever do make it there.
Chronicling a year of her life after moving to Brooklyn from her hometown of San Francisco, Wertz isn’t in search of her Sex and the City moment, but on an impulsive, murky ride that finds her continuously wearing the same somber outfit, working dead end jobs like take-out delivery biker, watching marathons of 30 Rock in lieu of a social life, and even making the ill-advised move of passing out on a park bench. Her brutal honesty and candid depictions — which comes across in her family drama, own insecurities, and self-awareness — are a refreshing take on the twenty-something story.
While at times the artist’s diversions seem to come out of nowhere — the political drama of the 2008 elections are played out in the background, but never quite fully realized in relation to the author’s life — Wertz’s story comically outlines the intricacies and quirks of life when things don’t always turn out the way you plan. And while she can’t help but come to the all too predictable ‘It’s all going to be okay’ moment, she does it in a way that doesn’t make you want to jam a pen in your eye.
