Well, there’s one thing that sometimes keeps me from ordering things here at ModCloth, and that is that you use UPS to send your international orders. The problem with UPS is that they refuse to leave stuff in your postbox and if you’re not in when they deliver for 3 consecutive days (easily achieved when working full-time), they return the pack to the USA. Super annoying, because one almost has to call in sick in order to receive their package! I know, this of course is not a problem caused by you but by UPS’s crazy delivery standards, but it would be so much easier for me if the package just came in the regular mail; they hold on to the package for you if you’re not home, so you can pick it up at the post office at any time. Otherwise, you’re doing a great job at keeping me as a European happy :)

    • lp 09/27/2010 at 12:58 am #

I get my UPS stuff delivered to my workplace. If this is possible for you, it’s great.

    • Ellen 09/28/2010 at 12:57 am #

I agree with this. Whilst the delivery time and security is a great bonus, I’m uncomfortable to have the packages addressed to work (particularly when it’s hardly work related items!). I wonder if ModCloth would consider other shipping options? I don’t mind paying similar sort of rates for other registered post packages other than couriers that will allow post offices to hold items. Any thoughts, ModCloth?

I totally agree with you!! I work 5 days a week during regular business hours and UPS has package pick-up but like 1 hour drive form my house…kind of defeats the purpose of paying all that money for shipping then if you have to take a road trip to get your stuff.

  2. Molly 09/26/2010 at 5:42 pm #

    way cool!

  3. Natalie 09/26/2010 at 6:34 pm #

    This is wonderful!
I have always wondered whether it would be possible for ModCloth to do something similar to Amazon and allow international buyers to pick between various speeds and postage costs. I would rather spend $15 on shipping and wait longer for it to arrive, than spend $45 (which is almost the cost of another product – I could be buying more clothes!).
That, however, is my only suggestion – and I’m very excited about the changes mentioned!

    • Ezgi 09/27/2010 at 6:04 pm #

Competely agree with you… There are so many things I want to order but every time I order something I keep leaving stuff out because I know how high the shipping rate is gonna be. I’d rather wait 3 weeks to get my order than pay the cost of another dress for shipping… Sometimes what I pay for shipping is more than what I pay for the dress! It’s frustrating…
I LOVE ModCloth and I want to keep buying more from you guys soooooo…. Natalie’s suggestion is a VERY good one =) wink*

    • Lana 09/30/2010 at 12:29 am #

Yes, definitely agree. The cost of Modcloth’s international shipping has gone up so much its barely worth me ordering there anymore, especially when other sites offer much cheaper international shipping options.

  4. Yanela 09/26/2010 at 6:36 pm #

God Knows I love all your cloths, but I’m a curvy gal and your sizes would wouldn’t stand a chance against my bust or hips! I know there are a lot of girls here just like me that would really appreciate if you guys had larger sizes!

    • tasha 09/27/2010 at 12:15 am #

totally with you on this one Yanela

    • Jenn (ModCloth) 09/27/2010 at 7:13 pm #

      Hi, Yanela and Tasha!

We try really hard to get a full range of sizes, but unfortunately the industry can make it hard! We wrote about why we haven’t been able to carry many larger sizes on ModCloth in our Size of the Times series earlier this year.

Feel free to leave any more feedback in the comments section of that post, and let us know if you know of any independent, ModCloth-y designers who offer clothes in a wider range of sizes!

  5. Claudia 09/26/2010 at 8:04 pm #

    YAY for the news!
I agree with atalie about allowing us to choose a different postage service it’s wayy expesinve! You guys should check on other shop sites on the web wich offer many options. Other than that, I really love you stuff.

  6. yoking 09/26/2010 at 9:14 pm #

    cool

  7. Katherine 09/26/2010 at 9:37 pm #

Yay! Living in Sydney really appreciate the 10% off intl shipping :) thanks guys! Already planning my next purchase…. oooo….. (Have to say I do agree with Natalie on shipping options though!)

  8. Eleanor 09/27/2010 at 5:09 am #

Yay! I’m also planning my next purchase to use the discount code :) although I do agree with Natalie! For the last item I bought from you guys, the shipping cost more than my dress :/

  9. Riitta 09/27/2010 at 10:42 am #

Hailing from Finland! :) Unfortunately I haven’t been able to order any of your beautiful dresses I would’ve really wanted… Which is, like already mentioned, due to the insanely high shipping costs. Have you looked into getting a cheaper service? I have ordered things from the US before and it has NOT been this expensive. :) The 10 % discount doesn’t help enough, especially because the order has to be over $100.

  10. Guta Chaves 09/27/2010 at 10:56 am #

I live in Brazil and I have to say that I always end up paying twice as much as would if I lived in the US. That’s because of all the Customs Policies here in Brazil, so every purchase over USD 50 is taxed (60% over hte amount). It’s not really cheap for me, but it’s worthy. For me, it would be better if the receipt didn’t come on the box (outside), because that’s what makes the Customs tax me. It would be better if there were a online receipt. Other than that, no complains! Never had a problem! =)

  11. vicki 09/27/2010 at 11:15 am #

Id love to be able to check the cost of shipping as i go along or like others have suggested pick a speed of delivery. I have not ordered from Modcloth yet (althou I check ur site everyday and add stuff to my wishlist) because im scared of the delivery costs and then how much it would cost to return, ASOS granted based in the UK have free returns and options for delivery costs I dont even think about ordering i just buy buy buy cos I know it wont cost me much to deliver and free to return.. I also sometimes find the sizing charts hard to guage, again making me wary becuase if im ordering from america I want my item to fit me perfectly so i dont have to return it..

  12. Kendra 09/27/2010 at 12:31 pm #

I have to agree with Lynn about the UPS shipping. It is SO expensive and I agree I would rather wait longer if it means paying less and having them leave it in my mailbox. Other than that I love ModCloth! <3

  13. lisa 09/27/2010 at 2:53 pm #

I agree that there should be more than one shipping price point option. Like others have said, 10% off is nice but you have to spend 100$ first which means your shipping cost is gonna be huge anyway as it goes up a lot with every item.
I remember when I stopped buying from Urban Outfitters online as their shipping cost was 50$ to CANADA! I’m literally just across the boarder. It was insane and I made a point to be vocal about that, and a year later I went back to their website and realized they had made a massive improvement on shipping to Canada – 10$ flat rate (subject to customs fees) OR 20$ flat rate that covers the customs fees. I immediately made an order when I saw that. Shipping costs really make or break most people’s decisions on shopping online, and everyone seems to be based out of the states which means the international customers suffer.

  14. Jem 09/27/2010 at 4:17 pm #

Shipping costs are the one thing that have curbed my shoppers lust. So many times I’ve gone to buy, but then when I’ve calculated the shipping, I abandoned the cart pretty quick. On a related issue, as I don’t want to be disappointed by something that cost that much in total, I pay a lot of attention to customer reviews particularly for fit and quality. Having those is great and they really help me decide.

    yay world(:

  16. sparkles 09/27/2010 at 11:42 pm #

yup shipping costs really do influence what we can buy…
i would much rather force myself to be patient for 4 items than be impatient and only buy 3 items..
but i still love modcloth regardless…
(and i hope you continue to have some gorgeous summer dresses in stock – it’s just starting to heat up in Australia!)

  17. Nanna 09/28/2010 at 4:38 am #

Hello! i love your iniciative, and i also love your clothes.
But i do not like your shipping prices!
i would love to buy 3 pieces instead of one plus shipping!!! (:

  18. maaike 09/28/2010 at 5:29 am #

I agree with everyone’s comments about the shipping. I’d love to buy more from modcloth, but with every item I have to say to myself ‘nope, in the end I’ll have to pay double for that’ and then force myself to never think about it again (which is hard!). So yeah, different shipping options (including non-UPS) would be great!

  19. Isobel 09/28/2010 at 11:30 am #

I adore ModCloth! Yes, shipping can be a hassle sometimes, but the 10% off did help curtail the shipping cost (I live in Canada). I was, also, a little worried about customs fees (as I’ve had to pay exorbitant amounts from other retailers in the States), but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I didn’t have to pay any extra fees when my package arrived!

For me, the most important factor when choosing where to shop (online or in-store) is customer service. Much like ModCloth, the cosmetic store Sephora has always given me fabulous customer service, which is why I shop there often. Their VIB program is great because it shows the customers how much they appreciate their business. Basically it’s a program where customers who spend a certain amount of money each year receive monthly perks and emails on special promotions. An example is their holiday gift card. In December they mail their VIBs a store gift card and the amount calendar year, Jan-Dec), would determine how much the gift card would be…thus encouraging customers to spend more! I’m not saying that you should have a VIB program at ModCloth, but little perks like that are always satisfying for customers ^_^

I live in Israel and with UPS it is too expensive

  21. aleigh 09/28/2010 at 5:37 pm #

this is awesome! i love modcloth!!

  22. Bec 09/28/2010 at 10:55 pm #

This would probably be helpful for not just international shoppers: for the shoe section, have a picture of the bottom of the outsole as well. I like to see what kind of traction a shoe has before deciding to buy.

I really appreciate that some of the item descriptions are so detailed (with exact measurements and even a rating scale for how warm coats are). It would be great if the item brand and where it’s made is always listed as well (and it doesn’t just say “imported”). I’m going to find out from the label anyway when I get it.

And yes, I agree with the helpfulness of reviews, and an item having reviews making it more likely I’ll buy (even if not all the reviews are five stars, I feel like I’m getting a balanced assessment and know what I’m getting). It’s great when somebody takes the time to write a detailed review. Maybe there can be some kind of reward for that. Coupons maybe? Encourage people to leave reviews.

And yes on the “more shipping options” suggestion!

im going to be honest i have been searching for a dress for my anniversary, and i found one!!! your website however is the worst one ive looked at. i get it retro is in i did not find one thing attractive in the whole lot it looks like my grandma sewed up one of her table clothes. i mean this with no disrespect but u really need to get a wider veriety

  24. Frida 09/29/2010 at 11:39 am #

This international customers week is a great idea, tho for international customers your dresses are still to expensive! and that’s not due to you, I mostly agree with your prices, when dresses are unique I’d pay that. BUT. The expedition is about 22$ for a single dress, 29$ for two dresses.. AND.. it’s that UPS you are using that costs an expensive extra to us, plus the VAT bills… I do accept to pay VAT bills, but if we can avoid to use UPS that would make it so much better. I had to pay 44 euro extra when I got my first – and only – dress I ordered from you, en plus UPS is now asking me for 19 euro more. Which makes it 20+44+19=83 euro!!! and the dress wasn’t even fitting me :( but I didn’t return it since I would not get back these money, and I’d to pay 20 euro more for sending back to you. This is really expensive to us in Europe and not worth it at all since the measurements seems too weird for us. What a pity, since your dresses are lovely and unique! :(

BTW, I am in love with the Fontana di Trevi dress you dedicated to Italy.. :) it’s very 60s fashion. Although in the description there are some minor errors and mismatches with some words, but if you want I can help you to improve it :)

This is super exciting! I can’t wait for the blog posts. :D

  26. Kate 09/30/2010 at 4:14 am #

I can only add to the chorus of ‘less expensive shipping options please’. I’m in Australia and often buy online from the UK, and am always so very shocked by UPS prices – you have to really, really want something, as most of the time shipping is more expensive than the items.

  27. Someone Nice 09/30/2010 at 5:32 am #

    Hi friends!
I’m from Australia and purchase all the time… your shipping isn’t too unreasonable!
The one thing that’d help me is a better returns system for international buyers. If we have to exchange an item, it costs $20 to mail it back, then another $30 postage to get a different size :(
Alternatively, if the measurements on every item were more exact/correct we wouldn’t need to return as often :)
    Love you all!

  28. Beth 09/30/2010 at 5:35 am #

An option of lower shipping costs would be really good. While its great that it is fast, I personally could wait a few weeks if it saved me some money. I have not bought items because the added (approx) $30 can make something that was perfect unreasonably priced.

  29. ruby 09/30/2010 at 2:54 pm #

I agree with all of these comments. I absolutely ADORE nearley all of the modcloth items and am desperate for a dress or two from here, but the shipping is more than the actual item! please bring the shipping price down…pretty pleeeease! love ruby scadooby, UK

  30. Merika 10/01/2010 at 8:02 am #

Hands down your online shop keeps me excited every day, I can’t say enough how much I love it! The biggest downfall for me living in London is that international tax charges are extortionate!!! I mean on top of the purchase and shipping I end up paying £30+ on UPS services.
Come on you brilliant Mod team!! Please alter your postage services, somehow giving more than one postage option. Then I will be ordering a hello of a lot more.
    Thank You,
    Your biggest fan

  31. Charlotte 10/01/2010 at 11:46 am #

Yeah choice of shipping costs. I was tempted by a skirt and the shipping was nearly the same price! Ended up getting my friend in the US to buy it and I got it from her when I visited!

  32. Ginta 10/01/2010 at 3:14 pm #

I agree the only thing stopping me from shopping more is the cost of the shipment. I’d really great if I could choose delivery service. I could wait some time if it meant paying less for the shipment.
