Our Be the Buyer Program – you know, that nifty part of our site where you can vote on which styles should be put into production – has been dashing along with flying colors brighter than a tropical island’s flora. And, we have people like Amanda, this month’s featured virtual buyer, to thank for making that happen!
We caught up with Amanda on the information superhighway, and found out all about her fun self, thoughts on Be the Buyer, and which items she really wants to be picked!
Where are you from?
I was born in Pittsburgh, but moved down to Florida before I was even a year old, and that’s where I grew up. I lived there for 23 years, and now reside in the Philadelphia suburbs. My frequent trips to New York City were just getting too expensive by plane; now I can get there in a scant two hours by mass transit.
What do you do? Are you student? Rocket Scientist? Cashier? Chef?
I am currently in events planning, so I get to travel to a new place around the country about every four months.
How do you fill up your free time? Have any hobbies?
And how! Let’s see, there’s the obvious – theater. I don’t act so much as write plays and sew costumes (as well as any other fashion project that hits my fancy). I just finished a full-length script that I’m working on getting some public readings for. I also dabble in photography and have sold some of my photos here. And finally, travel. I’m addicted.
How would you describe your style?
My absolute favorite combination is to pair patterns that don’t match but complement each other – like a lace skirt with a striped top. And, whenever possible, a splash of red for pop. There’s nothing wrong with wearing shiny red patent leather pumps with a yellow polka-dotted 1950s-style dress.
Which Be the Buyer item did you just buy? Any comments on styling it and when you use it?
I just bought the Flowers of Romance Dress! It’s so versatile, it’s amazing! I love wearing it with these purple suede kitten heels that I have… and the Timed Race Watch Necklace. I layer [the dress over] a lacy undershirt for work, and complete [the look] with a black and white feather in my hair. If I want to make it more casual for a family gathering, I just pair it with brown cowboy boots and a brown stretch belt.
How did you feel when you found out this item was picked for production?
I felt like it was released just for me. I’d been on the lookout for a new Be the Buyer item and was going crazy waiting for other items I voted for to come in… Then Flowers of Romance came in and I was like, “Huzzah! Someone answered my prayers!” The sweetheart neckline is gorgeous and takes the garment to the next level. Sometimes one simple detail can be enough to create something truly unique. That’s what fashion is all about–finding out how to make something new again.
What do you like most about Be the Buyer?
I love how it allows us to give direct feedback to the retailer. So many times, you see these new sites popping up that have a fresh and creative spin on products, but then over time morph into the mainstream haze. With Be the Buyer we can let our favorite store know exactly what we love to see and why we keep coming back.
Any other fun facts you’d like to add?
I’ve been to Ireland, Italy, Paris, Barcelona, Cabo San Lucas, Montreal, the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, and the Bahamas. At the top of my to-go list is France (in greater extent) and any place that was a part of Shakespeare’s life. My favorite food is Mexican. I love to dance. I’m really bad at gardening. OK, I’ll stop now.
