Making ‘Spirits’ Bright: Holiday Drinks from the ModCloth Kitchen

Celebrate the holiday season by hosting an intimate get-together with new and old friends filled to the brim with ‘cheers!’ If you delight in dishing up the unusual, then feast your lips on our picks for holiday cocktails – made, muddled and mixed just for you. In this first installment of our first-ever holiday drinks video series, learn how to make Spanish Coffee, and an alcohol-optional Sparkling Ginger-Lime Cooler.

Spanish Coffee

1 oz. brandy
3/4 oz. Kahlua
1/4 oz. high proof rum (such as Bacardi 151)*
1/4 oz. Tia Maria or rum-based coffee liquor
Freshly brewed coffee
Whipping cream

Rim glass with sugar by dipping it lightly in water and then sugar. Add the rum, brandy, Kahlua, and rum-based coffee liquor into the glass. Pour fresh-brewed coffee 3/4 inch from the top of the glass. Stir alcohol and coffee, top off with whipping cream. Add a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon to the top!

* Spanish coffee is typically made by caramelizing the sugar rim by lighting the high proof rum on fire, and rotating the glass at an angle. The above recipe is a safer version and comes out just as delicious!

Sparkling Ginger-Lime Cooler

1 (3-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
1/2 cup coarsely chopped fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup fresh lime juice (about 6 limes)
6 cups sparkling water or club soda*
1/2 cup sugar
Pinch of salt
Pinch of freshly ground black pepper

In a blender, blend together all the ingredients, except ice. Strain and serve (optionally) over lots of ice. You can also add gin or vodka. Garnish with fresh mint leaves. Serves 6.

* CLUB SODA WARNING! You might want to combine all ingredients in a separate container, and blend half of the mixture at a time. When adding the entire recipe to the blender, the carbonation in the club soda caused an explosion! Avoid this unnatural disaster by filling up your blender halfway, begin by pulsing, and continue to blend together until the initial carbonation has fizzled.

In the videos, we used the Heart of Wood Cutting Board, Little Trees, Big World Salt and Pepper Shakers. All other items used in the video are vintage!

    Even though I believe this Spanish Coffee’s got to be delicious, as someone who has lived in Spain her whole life, I’ve got to say I never heard of it.
