Jessica Virgin of Vintage Virgin is a stay-at-home mom, thrifting fanatic, and crazy-cool blogger. She’s not afraid to experiment and her outfits show it. One day, she’ll accessorize with a clock-shaped purse worthy of Flavor Flav, and the next, she’ll wear a demure dress with ankle socks. She’s all about exploring her personal style, and that’s why we love her. But blogging and being a mom aren’t all that make this fashionista tick—she’s also working on a preteen novel. Don’t take my word for it. Read her interview to find out her plans for the future, and what would make the perfect romantic date. You’ll also want to take a peek at the first ever namesake romper and wonder at her Vintage Virgin ModCloth picks.
Who are your style icons? What else inspires your sense of style?
My style icons are from all eras: Twiggy, Peggy Moffitt, Prince, Grace Jones, Michael Jackson, Janis Joplin, Madonna, Grace Kelly, Cher, Diana Ross, Bettie Page, Nico, Audrey Hepburn, Tina Turner, David Bowie, Edie Sedgwick, Lil’ Kim, and Bianca Jagger. My style is definitely inspired my mood and everyday life. If I’m happy, you’ll know.
If you could live in the pages of a book, or on the set of a movie, which book or movie would it be? Why?
Okay this may sound cra cra, but Clueless. That movie made me realize I’m not psycho, and it’s okay to be obsessed with something you love [like fashion]. I’m from a small town, so, I was considered weird. I was always dressed to impress before, but, after the movie, I had a lot more confidence.
What blogs do you follow?
The Haute Pursuit, Calivintage, Fade to Black, Fashiontoast, Where Did U Get That, Grand Theft Thrift, etc. I follow a lot of blogs, but these are the ones I check on a daily basis.
You’re known for your amazing collection of vintage finds. What’s your favorite vintage score?
I found a [black and white] striped Christian Dior three-piece suit for 50 cents! In mint condition. I wore it in my very first post!
Your son takes a lot of your outfit pics, right?
Yes and no. In the beginning, my son was my right-hand man, but once school started, he only helps me on the weekends. So, I mostly shoot myself these days.
Did you give him pointers, or did he figure it out all on his own?
He was highly interested in taking pics of his toys and Legos, and I saw how good he was. Since he’s been asking me since I started my blog, I decided to let him have a go. The first picture he took of me on my bike took my breath away. And he was in love ever since. I’m slowly weening him off the tripod and hope one day he will venture out on his own.
What’s your favorite thing about being a stay-at-home mom?
Freedom to do whatever I want, and knowing that I can be there for my son anytime of the day. I’m sooooo dedicated to my family, it’s borderline scary, but they’re the ones who keep me sane!
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I’m writing a preteen novel. After being a mom and vintage lover, writing is a big part of me. Other than my clothes, writing is the best way I express myself.
What would the perfect romantic date be for you?
A bike ride to the Japanese Gardens for a beautiful lunch and then go thrifting for dessert!
Do you have any secret dreams for the future?
Other than my book, I would love to be a stylist for photo shoots and events, or a personal shopper. I also want to have another baby, BADLY!
