Meet Jen of Jen Loves Kev! She’s an artist, a new mommy, and an inspiring blogger who shares not only outfit pics but recipes for healthy, yummy dinners (Stuffed squash? Yes, please!). She draws style inspiration from real girls like herself, which is one of the reasons why her blog is so great. You can peruse her daily looks and think, ‘Oh yeah, I could create this outfit with my closet!’ So, check out her interview and shop her favorite ModCloth items. You’ll also fall in love with the adorable print on her namesake dress.
Who are your style icons? What else inspires your sense of style?
I find that I am much more inspired by real life ladies. There are so many stylish bloggers out there that I find to be my style icons. It makes style real and attainable to me. Of course, I love people like Alexa Chung and other fashionable celebrities, but I can’t afford their fashion. I love to draw inspiration from old movies and art as well.
What blogs do you follow?
I love all my Delightful Dozen ladies. They are continually inspiring on a daily basis. I also love Calivintage, Fancy Treehouse, and Fancy Fine. I find I love a lot of non-fashion blogs as well like A Cup of Jo, Dear Baby, and the beautiful cooking blog Acorns and Apples.
You just had a beautiful baby girl! Do you feel your style has changed since you’ve become a mommy?
I do. I am more confident in my choices and have a stronger sense of what my style is, now that Rowan is here. I am also strangely aware of how short things are now when I wear skirts or dresses. Haha, that sounds like such a mom thing to say.
When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
This is going to sound so silly, but I wanted to be a Zamboni driver for the Toronto Maple Leafs (the person who clears/cleans the ice at hockey games). Can you tell I grew up in Canada? I thought it looked like the coolest job ever. I still would love to ride one at a hockey game someday, but as I grew up I [realized that I] wanted to teach art. I was always drawing, coloring, or making things. That is what lead me to go to school and get my teaching degree and teach high school art.
You were an art teacher until recently—are you an artist yourself?
I am. I would like to start working towards getting my MFA. I had a couple art shows in the past, and would love to continue to work on new artwork as we head into 2011. My favorite things are creating mixed media pieces, creating books, and using a letterpress.
If you could live in the pages of a book or on the set of a movie, which book or movie would it be? Why?
My favorite Christmas movie is White Christmas. I watched it like ten times this past Christmas, and every time I watch it, I can’t help but wish I could wear all of Judy’s outfits. They are so feminine and beautiful! Also, that black dress that Rosemary Clooney wears at the club is so freakin’ awesome. I just love that period in time. Your hair was always done, and you always were dressed up. I wish that I could get dressed up, head to the club and sit, and watch a musical performance while drinking martinis. So fun!
What would the perfect romantic date be for you?
I love food and adventures, so, it would combine both of those. I think it would start with some delicious dinner, then Kev and I would stroll hand in hand around the streets of Boston. Hopefully getting lost, and then getting to enjoy the time as we find new areas we have never been before. There def would be ice cream involved, and maybe even a late night trip all the way to beach to sit on the sand and listen to the waves before we drove home. These may or may not all be parts of favorite dates I have already had with Kev, haha. No matter what we did, as long as Kev was there it would be awesome.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I am super shy. It may sound funny because I have a blog where I daily share lots of personal details of my life, but I am a really shy person. When you get to know me, I’m not, but when I first meet people I get so nervous and always feel like I say the stupidest things. I try not to be awkward.
Do you have any secret dreams for the future?
Hmm. I don’t know if they are really secret, but I would love to get my MFA and start teaching art at a college. I would love to be a professor. I think it would be so rewarding to teach something I am so passionate about to other people who are there because they are passionate about it too. High school is fun, but it’s hard when you are continually trying to teach kids who hate art. Also, I would love to be able to spend a few months out of each year living in Hawaii. I miss it there. We lived there when Kev and I were first married and I want to share that with my daughter, Rowan. I want Hawaii to have a special meaning to her as well.
