Retro Revivals From New York Fashion Week

HINGED ON SUCCESS — Boho influences, like ’70s-inspired fringe, continue to dominate the runways. Photos: Mara Hoffman via New York Magazine, M. Patmos via Style.com, 1970s photograph via Agent-lee.

It’s only day two of NYFW, but if you were to take a peek inside my folder labeled “Fall 2011 Favorites,” you’re likely to think the Paris shows are winding down. The forerunners of this year’s New York Fashion Week have embraced vintage inspiration to the fullest, taking cues from the unlikeliest of places, like Yosemite in the ’60s or designer gurus of the ’90s. After the jump, see some of my favorite retro trends reflected in the earliest New York Fall 2011 presentations!

WHO WEARS SHORT SHORTS? — Brown, black, and neutral leather shorts are quickly becoming a wardrobe staple for fall, but did you know these iconic hot pants have been a fashion fixture since the 1960s? Get a head start on the trend with the Sitting Softly Shorts, constructed of a smooth suede you’ll want to wear over bare legs and opaque tights alike.

CUT(e)OUTS — I welcome the presence of unusual cutouts in both clothing and shoes. Why? It’s an easy way to show off some skin without feeling too exposed. The girls behind Vena Cava have embodied the cool, confident style of the ’70s in their latest collection, and I plan to do the same with the Picturesque Marks the Spot Dress or the Open Emotions Dress.

‘BARRY-MORE COLLARS, PLEASE’ — Sure, we all love an adorable Peter Pan collar, but do you have the panache to pull off a Barrymore collar? This bold, pointed collar style, which screams “1970s jetsetter,” was spotted at Wes Gordon’s presentation. Embrace the same fashion-forward accent with the Peppermint Pansies Dress, the Diner Jukebox Dress, or the Cinnamon and Cloves Dress.

Are there any vintage trends you’re hoping to see revived during Fashion Week?

I’d like to see more 40′s style, more fitted pencil skirts. I’d love to see some film noir inspired stuff.
