Meet Mel of Idée Géniale! She’s a French Canadian who now lives in Brooklyn by way of Vancouver, BC. I first met this stylish gal over lunch during New York Fashion Week a year ago, and then again last September when we shot her guest travel post for our blog. She’s always struck me as someone I’d want as a friend—easy to talk to, totally reliable, and of course having awesome style. Her look is definitely reminiscent of Zooey Deschanal, but there’s something all her own about her vintage-loving style. Who are your style icons? What else inspires your sense of style?
Some of my style icons right now are starlets from the ’40s and ’50s: Betty Grable, Gene Tierney, Jayne Mansfield, kinda of glamorous, a little pin-up. I love the thought of putting a little effort in the way you present yourself.
When I watch Boardwalk Empire or movies set in the ’40s, I get inspired by the ladies expertly coiffed hairstyles and perfectly applied lipstick.
What blogs do you follow?
My schedule right now isn’t exactly blog friendly, but when I do get the chance I definitely check out Here’s Looking at Me Kid, Bleubird Vintage, A Beautiful Mess and Jen Loves Kev.
If you could live in the pages of a book or on the set of a movie, which book or movie would it be? Why?
I’d love to be a character in a Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie. Amélie is by far my favorite, but all of his creations are so whimsical and sometimes unexpected. I’d love to play some offbeat character that is a little crazy in a sweet, fashionable sort of way.
If you were to create a mixtape for thrifting, which bands would you include?
I think I’d want a tape that mixes some oldies with newer bands. I’d include bands like The Shangri-Las and The Shirelles, She & Him, Stars, Arcade Fire, and Neko Case.
Who is your ultimate celebrity crush? If you got the opportunity to meet this person, what would you ask them?
I have a huge girl crush on Carey Mulligan at the moment. I’d love to go shopping and out to lunch with her. She’s seems like such a sweet, down to earth person.
What would the perfect romantic date be for you?
I think anything that involves me not having to plan. A home-cooked, vegan dinner on our building’s rooftop, accompanied by a bottle of wine would be nice.
Besides your blog, you also have a full-time job in the fashion industry. Can you give any advice to girls trying to get jobs in the biz?
Patience, and an open mind are two things that are definitely needed. The fashion industry is tough especially in New York. Starting at the bottom as an intern, receptionist, or customer service is a great way to get your foot in the door, even if you think that you are over-qualified for the job. If you work hard and practice patience, you’ll slowly be able to move up or make great connections to where you want to be.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Despite living in the city that never sleeps, I’m such a homebody! I love staying in and knitting or baking or watching a movie. I’ve moved around a lot, but my apartments have always been extra cozy just because I spend so much time there that I make sure that it’s a comfortable space for me.
Do you have any secret dreams for the future?
I’m not sure how secret this is, but I really can’t wait to start a little family of my own. I just moved in with my boyfriend this month so there’s no rush, but I’m really excited to start the “adult” chapter of my life with him.
