If your closet contains plenty of color and ’90s-inspired looks, we recommend familiarizing yourself with Danish brand Rütme.
We recently caught up with the brand known for their fearless designs and street-savvy silhouettes. After the jump, learn what drives the creativity behind Rütme’s energetic appeal, as well as who music-obsessed designer Rikke Charlotte Larsen has been listening to!
What is a typical day like for you at Rütme?
There is no typical day. Every day is different, and this is definitely one thing I love about my job! I’m always on the go — making the new collection, shooting the next catalog, or making sales material for Rütme’s agents!
We know Rütme is obsessed with music, so who are some of your favorite artists of all-time? Do you admire any musicians for their personal style?
I love music, but if I had to pick a few singers that I love for both their style and music it must be Lykke Li, Florence (of Florence and the Machine), and Lady Gaga. My top six songs of the moment are: The xx’s “VCR,” Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro,” Medina’s “Addiction,” Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers,” Florence and the Machine’s “You’ve Got the Love,” and Giana Factory’s “Rainbow Girl (Radio Edition).” You should definitely listen to that last song, it’s from a fantastic Danish indie band!
What is the history behind the Rütme brand?
Rütme started in October 2009. Before that, I was designing for Nümph. Like Nümph, Rütme aims to create a brand for the young, energetic and colorful girl!
Where does Rütme draw inspiration from?
Rütme draws a lot of inspiration from girls on the street and from fashion blogs. We were just in New York to search for inspiration and new ideas for the next collection, but we also love Hong Kong and Tokyo for cool trends!
It’s clear that Rütme harbors a passion for vibrant, colorful designs. Who are some of your favorite designers?
We love the spring collections from Comme des Garçons, Missoni, and Moschino. Their collections are full of splashy colors and funny shapes!
A number of Rütme styles seem to be retro-inspired in some way. If you could travel back in time to any decade, which decade would that be, and why?
The late ’80s or early ’90s! We love combining the functionality of sportswear and the colors of vintage T-shirts and sneakers with elaborate fashion details like puff shoulders and detailed graphics!
If you could design a piece for anyone famous, who would that be and why?
Lady Gaga! She is so outrageous and beautiful at the same time! And because she is so wild and untamed it would be a perfect challenge to make something so special and different that she would love.
Can you offer a few words of advice to an aspiring fashion or accessories designer?
Don’t follow the crowd, be true to yourself!
