When we heard that the “Balenciaga and Spain” and “Pulp Fashion” exhibitions were coming to San Francisco, we knew it was time to plan an office field trip! So, last week, the ModCloth merchandising and marketing teams headed over to the de Young Museum and Legion of Honor for a day of creative inspiration and fashion education.
We first stopped by the de Young to see “Balenciaga and Spain,” which examined the relationship between haute couture designer Cristóbal Balenciaga and his home country…

… but first, ModSquad Coordinator Emily and Fashion Writer Julie practiced their best fountain poses.

Swoon! We couldn’t get enough of the gorgeous garments from the Balenciaga exhibition, and all left wishing for more occasions to dress up in floor-sweeping gowns.

Many of us couldn’t resist purchasing postcards from the exhibition. Don’t you love the black-and-white postcard on the right?

Social Media Editor Martha may be away from her desk, but her work is always close by! After the exhibition, we trekked over to the museum’s observation tower for a panoramic view of the city. Up in the tower, Martha takes a moment to check on the @ModCloth Twitter. (You may recognize her as the ‘MS’ with whom you tweet with every day!)

A view of the California Academy of Sciences from the de Young observation deck.

After the de Young, we hopped over to the Legion of Honor for “Pulp Fashion,” which featured the incredible, trompe l’oeil paper costumes of Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchegrave.
Unfortunately, cameras weren’t allowed in the exhibition, but, hopefully, the two images below from the museum website give you a glimpse of what we saw.

Can you believe that all of those dresses were crafted from paper?

A happy row of Modsters.
If you’re in San Francisco this summer, we totally recommend that you check these two exhibitions out!

Oh my goodness, it looks like you had some much fun! (and of course you are all so well dressed too!)

I want this job.
How cool! I got to see the Balenciaga exhibit with my school’s fashion club back in April. I love the white bustier with the black ruffley skirt!
Hi! I’m a graphic designer at the de Young/Legion! Thanks for swinging by and checking out the exhibitions. And of course, for giving us such great compliments. Glad you guys enjoyed your time.
