Resort 2012 by Carven

The last of the Resort 2012 shows have wrapped up, so I decided to do a fun little roundup of my faves. Resort, much like Pre-Fall, has become a crucial season in the fashion industry, as evidence by the host of new designers added to the roster each year. What’s so great about these in-between season collections is that they typically offer more wearable pieces. Keeping that idea in mind, I picked these looks because they keep things subtle enough for everyday wear, but still offer plenty of inspiration!

At Last, the Perfect Pair of Vintage-Inspired Lingerie 13

If you, like us, have yearned for the perfect set of romantic, retro-inspired lingerie, then look no further than the newly arrived Oh-So-Lovely Bra and Shorts. These styles come straight from The Loved One‘s debut collection and are just what you need to pamper yourself this season.

You may recognize The Loved One as the side project of 26-year-old Brooklynite Hannah Metz, of the blog Hannah and Landon. The Loved One began in 2009 as a vintage consulting and sourcing duo, with Hannah in New York and co-founder Elvia Lahman in Los Angeles. After years of driving cross-country, digging through dusty vintage shops and thrift bins for retailers, they decided to pursue their dream of fashioning their own line of vintage-inspired lingerie, financed through Kickstarter.

“Our main source of inspiration is vintage Frederick’s of Hollywood catalogs,” says Hannah. “Both of us have such extensive vintage lingerie collections, and we wanted to share that with people.”

The results are pieces such as the Oh-So-Lovely Bra and Shorts below, which come with delectable features such as whisper-thin lace and elegantly belled shapes. Needless to say, we’ll be living in these around the house.

Will you take home one of these lovely pieces?

Page Turners: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow 10

Fashions come and go, sparkle and fade, and so do hairstyles the above ‘do is no exception. After recently cycling through magazine tears from my college days, I happened upon this picture-perfect example of pastel-layered locks from the September 2004 issue of W. Seven years later, this spread hair and styling remains timeless to me.

Do you have a magazine tear that you’ve held on to? What does it depict and when was it from?

The Written Wardrobe: "Perennial" 1

“And now I drive into town for the June market, and I sell our wares alone. Your mother’s almond granola recipe. The black raspberries that inked our fingertips and stained our teeth and tongues.”
- “Perennial” by Anne Barngrover

This short fiction piece explores the wardrobe choices we make based on the seasons in the air and in our own lives. What’s the weather like where you are? How is it affecting your ‘style mood’?

GPOYW on the ModCloth Tumblr! 5

If you’re a regular on Tumblr, then you just might be familiar with the meme GPOYW (Gratuitous Picture of Yourself Wednesdays). We saw this as the perfect opportunity to gratuitously share photos of our employees on the ModCloth Tumblr. To kick things off, we asked Erin, blog writer and resident Tumblr whiz, to share a few photos of herself.

Be sure to check out our #GPOYW tag every Wednesday to see a new silly ModFace!

If you crave colors, Coury’s Fancy Treehouse will be a favorite for you. Her perfect pairings of color and silhouettes are so inspiring, we just had to feature her as Blogger of the Moment. With a halo of sunny California light glowing behind her platinum blonde hair, her outfits photos appear almost magical. You’ll want to channel some of Coury’s whimsical style by perusing her ModCloth picks and donning her romantic namesake dress.

Casserole dishes by Etsy seller GallivantingGirls, sunflower dish by Flickr user Luvinthemommyhood, vintage pink dish by Etsy seller MakingItHomeNY, and butterfly gold dish by Etsy seller Mituvintage

Upon seeing these colorful dishes, you might be saying, “Oh! My grandma had a casserole dish just like that! Where could it be now?” (And, if you’re like me, now feel compelled to fill every cabinet in your kitchen with them.)

The kitschy kitchenware above is just a sampling of what the Pyrex company has been putting forth since the early 20th century. Durable, affordable, and memorable, these colorful casserole dishes are collected by many a vintage lover. They’re available on Etsy, Ebay, and, if you’re lucky, your local thrift store. For a slightly modern twist on these culinary classics, check out our Gourmet Gardens Container Set.

What does one do with these dishes besides gaze at them? Bake casseroles in them, of course! Check out this yummy Summer Squash Casserole recipe, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, this 1955 recipe for Ham Casserole that includes ham, sweet potatoes, pineapples, and marshmallows.

Do you collect vintage kitchen wares or decor? Tell us about it!

The Sound of Violens 7

Photo by Tom Hines. Image via Violens

When I came across Brooklyn-based indie band Violens, I assumed I was going to hear, well, violins! But after testing out their tunes, my attention was instead caught by melodic guitars, bass, percussion, and synth-based New Wave vocal harmonies.

The trio, whose influences span from Buddy Holly to black metal, have opened for a few of my personal favorites, including MGMT, Deerhunter, and Grizzly Bear. If you like what you hear, take a trip to their Bandcamp page, where you’ll find one of my other faves, “When to Let Go”, in addition to their own picks for a free mixtape. When I listen to Violens, I hear summer — upbeat, dreamy, laid-back — down to a ‘V.’

Have you stumbled upon a new favorite artist? I’d love to hear what sounds are pulling at your heartstrings!

I always thought that song “Sunglasses at Night” was pretty darn silly, but maybe I just wasn’t picturing the right sunglasses…‘cause upon seeing this bevvy of retro-inspired white frames, I was tempted to snag a pair of my own and wear them 24/7! Looks like I’ll have to get on the prowl for an out-of-the-box pair of sunnies to compliment my closet of crazy clothes.
