Couture Crushes: Our Favorite Collections from Fall 2011 Couture

From heavy wools and plush velvets that made me long for cold so that I could snuggle into their warmth, to ephemeral creations of lace, sequins, and chiffon that evoked the crystalline dance of snowflakes, the Fall 2011 couture shows turned out a host of gorgeous garments. I can never get enough of couture, so I picked some of my favorites to share with you!

Elie Saab – Hands down the best show of the lot, there’s only one word to describe the Elie Saab couture collection – impeccable. Not only did each ethereal garment take my breath away, but the progression of looks was seamless. Beginning with ice blue, then flowing into white, peach, brown, and navy, the collection made one feel as though they were watching the passing of a snow-coated day, from the first light in the sky, to the glitter of sun on snow, to the fall of dusk, to settling of night.

Armani Privé – Although not bowled over by all the looks, I really enjoyed the Armani Privé collection for its fantastic architectural lines and Japanese influence, particularly as seen in these two looks. And, anyone who knows me won’t be surprised to hear I loved the hats. Best of all, though, this collection is a tribute of sorts, as Armani has been donating to a UNESCO program focused on helping the youth affected by the earthquake that hit Japan earlier this year.

Dior –Though the polite disappointment in the Dior show was more widespread than Justin Bieber’s popularity, I couldn’t help but appreciate the fun spirit of the first few looks. It was as though Saved By the Bell had transformed into an ensemble (in a good, albeit humorous, way!), and the quirky geometric shapes and ’80s influence made me smile.

Jean-Paul Gaultier– Jean-Paul Gaultier masterfully drew upon retro silhouettes, from the New Look form to the wiggle dress, yet added intriguing touches that thrust the outfits into a modern aesthetic. The collection beautifully danced across many an era of trendsetting looks, or, as Style.com put it, “…this collection cast its eye back over decades of boundary-pushing, taboo-busting innovation in design.”

Valentino– If done right, stunning fabric can go a long way in taking a piece from just fine to fantastic, and Valentino mastered that here. The decadent fabrics used in this show were complemented perfectly by clean, simple silhouettes, resulting in a bevvy of elegant dresses marching astride several fantastic coats, such as the sci-fi-meets-retro cape at right.

Giambattista Valli – The Giambattista Valli collection was a bit hit and miss. As long as he stuck to trim, fluid silhouettes, things looked gorgeous, but the minute he added volume, things went awry (as displayed by the leopard-print number with a gigantic waist puff above). Perhaps these voluminous choices could have worked with less complex fabrics and patterns, but as it stands, these pumped up creations fell flat.

Which of the above looks, or of the complete collections, is your favorite?

The Elie Saab and Valentino collections are my favorite. The Elie Saab one is my fantasy collection for my fantasy life where people still go to supper clubs to watch big bands play and do the foxtrot. Funny about the Dior– I just blogged about that one with side-by-side comparisons to Jem doll fashions!

;_;!!! ELIE SAAB!!! I saw those pictures and almost cried. I want to wear #3 as my wedding dress. Now nothing will ever work… *sigh* how wonderfully disappointing. Love, love love it. I’d kill for any of those gowns.
