The Writing on the Narwhal

There’s a new, adorable creature making a splash at ModCloth, and to tell you the ‘tooth’, we can’t resist – we’re completely nuts for narwhals! As soon as we saw the Narwhal-to-Wall Fun Figurine (above), we couldn’t imagine anything cuter than chilling with a ‘unicorn of the sea’ in all sorts of situations!

Native to the northern waters off the coast of Canada and western Greenland, the narwhal is known for the spiraled tusk that extends from the top of its head, at times growing over nine feet in length! Don’t call it a “horn” – the tooth that makes this whale stand out among the waves serves as a sensory organ, capable of detecting minute changes in water conditions.

Historically, these tusks were collected for their perceived power and often mistaken for the detached feature of the mythical unicorn. In addition, a prized spot in any ‘cabinet of curiosity,’ specimens of the narwhal’s spike were transformed into scepters, carried by the Hapsburg crown, and one even made its way into the gallery of Queen Elizabeth.

Bored with the beluga, blue, or baleen whale? Put a ‘twist’ on the original with one of these spire-topped sweethearts!

Absolutely to ‘dive’ for! An imagined embrace between me and my new, no-joke friend, the narwhal, by fellow ModCloth fashion writer Anna Reilly.

Which unconventional creature would be a showstopper in your zany zoo?

Chris
