With their winning combination of fuzziness, silliness, and slight megalomaniacal tendencies, cats were destined to be the queens and kings of the Internet. Thanks to some witty and artistically inclined kitty-loving humans, felines are poised to rule webcomics, too. The ones on my must-read list never fail to elicit giggles, smiles, and sudden overwhelming cuddle urges.
Above: Drawn by stylish Bay Area artist Yasmine Surovec and inspired by her kitties Shelley, Money, and Dumpling, Cat vs Human explores the fine line between a cat lady and a crazy cat lady from the perspective of one who already joyfully crossed it. You’ll recognize yourself and your furry friend in her adorably drawn panels of scratched legs, clawed furniture, and fur-covered clothes.
Hey Pais bills itself as the only webcomic written and drawn by a cat, the eponymous Paisley. I suspect she gets some help from her owner Sarah, who Pais affectionately refers to as “the girl.” Pais writes about subjects that matter to cats like prettiness, loafing, snuggles, and treats. She’s also known for cat-centric retellings of popular films and feline homages to geek culture staples like Harry Potter, Dr. Who, and Star Trek.
Popular comic Nedroid isn’t usually cat-centric, but when writer Anthony Clark decided to tackle a kitty tale, it was pure comedy catnip. If you’ve ever been pawed awake before dawn by a tabby who wants breakfast, you’ll recognize Party Cat’s relentless drive to achieve his desire. Which is, of course, to get down and party.
These kitten tales remind me of my devoted, and yes, slightly crazy, relationship with my boys, Pimm and Gimlet. Are there any online or print comics that tell the story of you and your kitty companions?
