Katie of Skunkboy Creatures has got it going on. She’s a fab blogger who styles super cute ensembles and crafts up a storm. She’s made a career out of designing adorable plush toys and her blog is an inspirational wonderland for all things creative. She’s truly a domestic powerhouse, and her blog will get even the least crafty person dreaming of DIYing. So, without further ado, read on to learn about this lovely lady and just what makes her tick. Then, take the time to peer at her namesake dress and her most loved ModCloth items.
What’s the story behind the adorable plush toys you make and sell? They’re so creative!
I was looking for a creative outlet several years back and just really loved making animals. Now, I get to be a part of people’s special moments (i.e.: weddings, babies, birthdays, anniversaries). It makes me so happy!
You’re a DIY dynamo — how do you dream up the neat projects you highlight on your blog?
There is inspiration all around us. Sometimes a DIY project comes from a need, like searching to find the perfect skirt until you realize YOU can make it yourself. Sometimes a DIY project comes from just having a little bit of crafty fun. I like to keep ideas in notebooks, that way if I’m ever in need of a blog project or something fun for a craft night, I always have one handy.
You have a feature on your blog called Music Mondays — what are your favorite bands at the moment?
My favorite bands don’t change very often. I’m pretty loyal to my ‘old faithfuls,’ but here is a short list of bands I’ve been especially loving lately: Band of Horses, The Like, Beach House, Ryan Adams, Jenny Lewis, Delta Spirit, Death Cab [for Cutie], Coconut Records, Starflyer 59.
As a mama, how do you stay stylish while running after kids? Any tips?
I like getting dressed in clothes I love, so steering clear of the sweatpants isn’t hard for me. My oldest daughter is finally old enough to really start loving fashion, so it’s fun to get dressed every day with her because she gets so excited about it. Liking the clothes you own and feeling comfortable with your style are things that make getting dressed for the world every day easier… even when you work from home.
You call Missouri home — would you say your locale influences your style?
I believe that everything around us influences us, so for me, the pumpkin patches and bonfires and hot cocoa have me loving autumn colors right now. It also doesn’t hurt to have a very stylish group of friends around me. We all love finding good vintage, whether it’s clothing or home decor, and there are still plenty of treasures hiding here in Missouri, waiting to be found.
If you could live in any era, what era would it be and why?
For fashion’s sake I want to say the ’50s or ’60s! The clothing and style were just amazing back then. I also have a bit of nostalgia for the ’90s. I know those are pretty much opposite, but for me there was something magical about being a teen in the ’90s.
What are your favorite blogs?
There are a lot! Thankfully, sites like Bloglovin’ keep me organized. Here’s a start, but there are many, many more: A Beautiful Mess, Smile and Wave, Food Coma, Create Loves, The Velvet Bird, Freckled Nest, Vanilla and Lace, Bleubird Vintage, Our City Lights, Sometimes Sweet, Lune, My Girl Thursday, Seablanket… seriously, there are so many more!
Katie let us know how she’d wear her namesake dress for a trip to the pumpkin patch.
