Fave Finds: Vintage Cocktails For The New Year

Who: ModWriter Julianne

What: Vintage bar guide

Where: eBay

How Much: $5

When I Use It: “This guide features 80 drinks from back in the day, feeding my obsession for vintage cocktails. Just turn the dial to pull up a recipe corresponding to a numbered drink. In 2012, one of my goals is to make a cocktail each week from this guide… maybe even share a few of them on the ModCloth Blog!”

Shopping Tips: “This bar guide originally called out to me at a flea market, but it was marked for $10 and the dial didn’t work. Ten dollars for something that doesn’t work? Pssh. I tried talking the seller down, but negotiation was a no-go. Later that evening, I searched “vintage bar guide” online, and found the same exact one in working condition for only 99 cents! My advice: don’t pass up online shopping. With a little leg work, I got my bar guide for half the price, and in working condition!”

P.S. Here are three of my favorite drink recipes from the guide, in case you don’t have your New Year’s drink menu solidified yet!

#25 Coffee Cocktail – 1/3 brandy, 1/3 Cointreau, 1/3 cold black coffee. Shake well with ice and strain into glass. Best for after dinner.

# 35 French “75″ – 1 jigger dry gin, 1/3 jigger lemon juice. 1 teaspoon powdered sugar. Pour into tall glass 1/2 full of ice. Fill with champagne.

#57 New Orleans Fizz – 2 jiggers dry gin, 1 egg white, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon cream, juice of 1/2 lemon, 1 dash orange flower water. Shake well with ice. Fill with soda.
