Notice anything different about our latest Shop Our Outfits collection? That’s right — not only are the models all ModCloth employees, we also included their measurements!
As you probably already know, we encourage ModLovers to share measurements in our product reviews. You have the option of making those measurements public or private.
The majority of ModCloth accounts list private instead of public measurements — 70%, to be exact. That probably isn’t very surprising, since it’s easy to feel insecure due to body-perfection pressure. Popular culture even goes so far as to condemn non-ideal measurements:
“36-24-36? Ha ha, only if she’s 5’3.” – Sir Mix-A-Lot
With sentiments like that, it’s no wonder that girls and women aren’t keen on sharing on our measurements. After all, anything we divulge puts us at risk for judgment.
On that note, here’s a question for ya: Would you rather tell a crowd of people your dress size, or your bust, waist, and hip measurements?
I posed that query to some ModPeeps. The vast majority opted for ‘dress size’ (15 out of 20), but their reasoning — and the reasoning of the measurement proponents — surprised me! Here are a few noteworthy responses:
“Definitely dress size, no question. The vagueness is comforting in a way the cold, hard truth of inches can’t be.” – Martha, Social Media Editor
“I’m more of a visual person. Bust/waist/hip measurements mean nothing to me. I’d be more comfortable saying dress size.” – Kristin, Photographer
“Hmm. Very good question. I would say hip.”
“Well, what if it was providing your dress size versus your whole set of measurements?”
“Ooohhh. In that case, I would cry.” – Aire, Traditional Media Coordinator
“I would do bust/waist/hip, because saying a lot of numbers might throw people off. Or, they might think I’m taller than I am, and if I was actually taller, I’d have similar measurements to Beyoncé.” – Anna, Fashion Writer
A commonly cited reason ladies prefer to give their dress size over their measurements is, “I don’t know my measurements.” Well, we can remedy that! Here’s info and a video on how to accurately take your measurements.
But, even if you know your measurements, are you willing to share them? Only 30% of ModLovers have ever submitted even just one public measurement (and that includes height and/or shoe size).
Now, we open the conversation up to you! What are your thoughts on the issue? Why do you think exact measurements tend to be a touchy topic, whereas dress size is more readily shared?
