One of our favorite facts about life at ModCloth is that when it comes to inspiration, we often find it in you! During our monthlong prep for this year’s wedding guide, we found ourselves endlessly inspired by a bridal photo that Facebook fan Athena posted on our wall.
We loved the retro styling, DIY details, and beaming smiles on Athena and her party, and so, asked Athena to share how she came up with her “Vintage Hollywood Glam” theme, and how she and her friends brought it to life on her big day!
“Jon and I are Greek Orthodox, and a traditional G.O. wedding is pretty rigid, so I really wanted to personalize the wedding in any other way I could,” says Athena on why she chose a stylistic theme for her wedding. “I’ve always loved vintage fashion and old movies, and Jon is a WWII history buff. [He’s also] a Captain in the Air Force, and we knew he would be wearing his uniform. We started talking, and ended up with a ‘Vintage Hollywood Glam’ theme — with airplanes! Jon was fine with the theme as long as there were airplanes involved.”
For her wedding, Athena wore a taffeta mermaid-cut dress that she customized with black buttons down the back to match the wedding’s black, white, and purple color scheme. Her bridesmaids carried DIY paper bouquets while wearing ModCloth’s very own Mystery Loves Company Dress, which Athena saw as the perfect church-friendly, fashion-conscious option for all of her gal pals.
“When I saw the Mystery Loves Company Dress, I knew it was perfect!” she says. “I actually ordered one first, to see how it fit, and loved it so much I called the girls that night, telling them to order it! And, I may have, um, kept my sample one that I ordered ‘just to try…”
As for their fabulous fascinators, those too were handmade using this tutorial from Once Wed. “Give yourself an afternoon, a pile of felt and feathers, and just go to town!” Athena says. “I found some old, broken rhinestone brooches at Goodwill and in my sister’s stash of sparkles and added them to the feathers to bring on the bling!”
Athena applied her DIY attitude to her wedding decor as well, whipping together cupcake stand centerpieces out of cleverly redressed cardboard and soup cans, and elegant vases from spray-painted wine bottles decorated with fringe and ostrich feathers (pictured above). As a final touch, her photographers brought a working Kodak Brownie camera to the festivities, so there were real vintage film photographs of Athena and Jon’s vintage-styled wedding!
