Long before housewives conquered reality TV, one woman trailblazed the path by taking on Beverly Hills’ social scene — and she did it with an exceptional flair for fashion.
Starring Shelley Long and introducing Jenny Lewis, the 1989 movie Troop Beverly Hills follows the adventures of shopaholic Phyllis Nefler (Long). In an effort to bring order to her life amidst a messy divorce, Nefler decides to lead the local Wilderness Girls troop, to which her daughter Hannah (Lewis) belongs to along with seven other over-indulged daughters. Under her guidance, the girls earn badges for traditional activities (CPR, volunteering), and not-so-typical skills such as jewelry appraisal and sushi appreciation.
Nefler’s unorthodox approach, which includes celebrity fashion show fundraisers and taking shelter at the Beverly Hills Hotel when she deems their campsite unacceptable, doesn’t sit well with the Wilderness Girls’ head honcho, so Nefler and the girls are forced to work together to overcome the odds against them.
A story of friendship and fashion, Troop Beverly Hills is an iconic ode to late ’80s style — complete with leotards, oversized florals, and shopping trips galore. You’ll come away saying, “Beverly Hills — what a thrill!”

What’s your favorite fashionable ’80s movie?

I was 8 when this came out and I remember thinking Shelley Long was just SO stylish. But, I was also a girl scout so it was a little bit insulting, too!
You are so right, she was one of the original housewives. My sisters and I loved this movie; it was fun and funny. And of course the fashion was 80′s but some how it worked! <3
So fun! My mom and I loved this movie, and watched it every time it was on TV!
WoW what a throw back…totally forgot about this movie!
I sure do love this movie! “shopping is our favorite skill”.
MODCLOTH please find someone to make that cape that Shelley Long is wearing in the fifth picture!
I second that
Jenny Lewis is in the second to last photo. Far left. =)
I live by the quote, “Just because you’re out in the wilderness, there’s no reason not to look your best.”
Oh my goodness, I loved that movie as a kid! I’m going to have to find it online so I can buy it :)
I’ve always thought this movie was underrated. It’s hilarious and Phyllis Nefler’s wardrobe was fabulous.
