Meet Hannah of Foxtail & Fern

UK-based vintage and lifestyle blogger Hannah, of Foxtail & Fern, is not your average fashion fiend. She has her degree in zoology, and spends her spare time exploring historic buildings, which you can tour through photos on her blog. But while she’s hunting down haunts to photograph, she’s always wearing amazing retro outfits we love. Her namesake dress would be the perfect accompaniment for one of her excursions, not to mention her ModCloth faves. Read her interview to learn more about what makes this blogger tick.

What blogs do you read for inspiration?
I read so many blogs that it’s hard to choose. I’m particularly fond of vintage-inspired blogs. I love Liebemarlene, Wishwishwish, Fancy Fine, Calivintage, Human Sea… and, like I said, many, many more!

Your blog features many photos documenting your trips to beautiful old homes. How do you scout these locations, and which one has been your favorite?
I’m a member of the National Trust, which is an organization in the UK that preserves big old estates and opens them up to the public. They have a book that lists all of their properties so we just pick and choose from that and try to go to as many as possible. My absolute favourite visit so far was to Calke Abbey. It’s one of the few (perhaps only) National Trust buildings that’s been preserved in a state of disrepair, and it’s hauntingly beautiful as a result.

You live in a little village in the UK–how would you describe the style there, and how does it affect yours?
Hmm, that’s quite a hard question to answer without sounding judgmental, so I’ll just say that there isn’t really anybody who shares my sense of style around here! I’d like to think that living in a small village doesn’t affect my own style, but if I’m honest, I probably dress more casually when I’m at home (as opposed to when I lived in Edinburgh).

Zoology was your major at the University of Edinburgh. Is blogging your full-time job, or are you pursuing another career as well?
Yes, but I’m moving away from biology now and thinking about pursuing a career in fashion retail. That sounds crazy given my background (and maybe it kind of is), but I’ve always been torn between a love of biology and fashion and I’ve finally decided that this is the career path I want to take. I’m sure some kind of fashion degree would be a thousand times more useful for this than the degree I have, but I loved studying zoology and I wouldn’t change a second of my university experience. Blogging definitely isn’t a job for me, it doesn’t earn me a penny!

And we have to ask…what’s your favorite animal?
I couldn’t possibly choose a favorite! I can’t think of an animal I don’t like. Red pandas are really cute.

As an avid thrifter, what was your favorite all-time find?
It would have to be a 1970′s Ossie Clark dress that I scored for a measly £1. Unfortunately, it was a bit too big for me, but I sold it on eBay for £250! It was a long, off-white pleated maxi dress and it was absolutely beautiful.

What staple fall pieces are you most excited to add to your autumn wardrobe?
Thick knitted jumpers, wool hats and, hopefully, the perfect (and so far elusive to me) black leather jacket.

We asked Hannah to style her namesake dress, and she perfectly paired it for a breezy fall day of thrifting in her hometown.

Hannah picked perfect accompaniments to the Foxtail & Fern Dress: It’s Scrunch Time Shoe, Ivy League of Your Own Jacket, London Longing Scarf, Upwardly Mobile Satchel, and the Long Chain Drifter Necklace.
