This month, we're thrilled to introduce you to Mandy of Miss Indie. Our latest Blogger of the Moment epitomizes the ModCloth girl with her oh-so-retro looks and dynamo crafting skills, and we can’t wait for you to meet her. Read on to learn about her fave blogs, what she’s listening to right now, and which movies she’d love to live on the set of. Oh, and don’t forget to check out her vintage-inspired namesake dress and ModCloth love list!
What blogs do you read for inspiration?
Some of my favorite blogs are Scathingly Brilliant, The Perfect Pear, Ghosts Waltz, Knitxcore, Cheeky Cheeky, and Blythe Ponytail Parades. I go crazy over a blog that is well-designed and has a clearly defined style. You can check out the Daily Reads section of my blog for more of my favorite reads. It’s constantly being updated because I love making new blog friends.
If you could live on the set of a movie, what would it be and why?
This is such a fun question! I would love to live in a ’50s [or] ’60s beach movie like Where The Boys Are, Gidget, or Beach Blanket Bingo. The ’50s and ’60s are my absolute favorite decades… I adore the fashion and style from that time, and it’s always been a little dream of mine to road trip to the beach with my girlfriends for the summer and fall for a cute surfer boy (all while singing, dancing, and wearing a super cute swimsuit, of course).
What music is inspiring you right now?
“Golden Sea” by Sea Lion, Some Nights by Fun., and anything by The Decemberists. During this season I tend to listen to a lot of The Decemberists and Death Cab For Cutie. Their music just has such a cozy sound to it and helps get me into a creative mindset.
As a big crafter, what project are you most proud of?
The project I’m most proud of was owning a successful handmade accessories shop for two years. I crocheted beanies, scarves, cowls, gloves, bags, and more and sold them on Etsy from 2008 to 2010. In 2010, I decided to focus on my blog and promote a handmade lifestyle, so I moved my shop to a smaller venue for the time being.
I’m currently working on a small jewelry collection (my latest creative passion) and I plan on sharing peeks of the creative process soon!
You grew up in Vegas, but currently call Springfield, Missouri home — what brought you there, and what do you love most about the city?
When I was in seventh grade, my family and I moved to Springfield so my parents could expand their business. I absolutely adore my city! It’s so cute, with a wonderful creative community and fun shops and flea markets to explore. Downtown Springfield and the Commercial Street area are my favorite places to hang out. So much coffee and shopping!
Do you blog full-time? When you’re not blogging how do you spend your free time?
I do blog full-time, as well as working for my family’s business full-time. If I’m not working on my blog, I’m constantly thinking about it — what posts I should plan next, coming up with fun new DIYs, how to style my next outfit, etc. A lot of people think that working from home is so much easier, but let me tell you, it’s not.
When you work for yourself, you never truly get to leave your job for the day. It can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you think being an entrepreneur will be easy. I wouldn’t have it any other way though. I live for the rush and creative freedom that being my own boss allows.
When I’m not blogging, I love grabbing coffee from a local coffee shop, going to the movies, reading (I’m obsessed with Chuck Palahniuk right now), visiting flea markets, and working on whatever creative hobby I’m loving at the moment.
We love how Mandy styled her namesake dress in pastel hues. In a perfect pairing, Mandy matched her dress with: the Charter School Cardigan in Ivory, Sweet Spectator Heel in Melon, Mint for Me Ring, theBalm Precisely! Liquid Eyeliner, Just Called to Say Hibiscus Bag, and The Pearl I Love Headband. Where would you wear the Miss Indie Dress?
