Cover Stories: The Iconic Aretha

Aretha Franklin, Aretha's Gold

It’s become a tradition. Every time I head home for the holidays, I’m gifted with a few hand-me-down records from family and friends. Some of their covers are scribbled with small notes of ‘To’ and ‘From,’ telling stories of who owned them first. Some have track recs smeared on their corners in pen, and others are simply left clean under their original plastic sleeves to be enjoyed for years to come.

One of my all-time-favorite hand-me-down records is the compilation album Aretha’s Gold by Aretha Franklin. It may be her music that reminds me of the friend who passed it along, but it’s her album’s dreamy image that resonates with me long after the needle (and holidays) have stopped.

Browse through some of these other Aretha record covers, and see if they don’t inspire a few new traditions (and hand-me-down gift ideas) of your own.

Thanks to ModCloth fan Megan H. for e-mailing us about Aretha’s awesome style and inspiring this post!
