I am all over the geekdoms, the main three being Star Wars, Harry Potter and Doctor Who and my entire house reflects that (I have TARDIS tv cabinet after all) I have been dying to get my hands on this cookbook for awhile now and it would ROCK to win it.

my kids and i often quote Star Wars around the house, but lately we’ve been shouting “IT’s A TRAP!” an awful lot.
I also reverse appliqued the quotes “I LOVE YOU” and “I KNOW” on two throw pillows for my living room!

My favorite “geeky indulgence” is J.R.R Tolkien’s awe-inspiring “The Lord of the Rings”, which I reread as often as time allows~ There are so many memorable quotes from Tolkien’s work, so picking just one was difficult~!

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.” – Gandalf

  3. Alyssa 12/20/2012 at 11:44 am #

I grew up watching Star Wars and love reading and collecting comic books but my current obsession has to be Doctor Who. One of my favorite quotes is “There’s something that doesn’t make sense. Let’s go and poke it with a stick.” – The Doctor.

  4. Courtney Robley 12/20/2012 at 12:25 pm #

My favorite “geeky indulgence” is definitely Harry Potter! I really miss it already and I wish it wasn’t over. One of my favorite quotes is

“Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Dumbledore

  5. Leah Baik 12/20/2012 at 12:50 pm #

Okay… I’ll be honest here. I have a HUGE Battlestar Galactica problem. One of my favorite moments is when Baltar goes “Ladies and gentlemen, please. Please. We are in a laboratory. There are hazardous chemical compounds everywhere. That–that’s a thermo-nuclear bomb, for frak’s sake, so…”

Hilarious! Anyway this happens to me everytime I start watching the DVD set.

The whole Firefly/Dr. Horrible Whedon geeky gang is my thing. Luuuurve them.

My favorite moments in the Firefly series were as River really started coming into her own and you start to find out she’s a crazk shot and not just some crazed test subject. The first time she saved someone’s life, I absolutely geeked flat out.

  8. Becky 12/20/2012 at 2:03 pm #

I’m definitely a multi-geek, and regularly have fun joking around with my friends from Star Wars, Harry Potter, Firefly, Doctor Who (which is probably my close second), etc. But Lord of the Rings and all other things Tolkien is hands-down my favorite, so you can bet I’m loving the Hobbit-mania that’s going on now! One of my favorite quotes from Return of the King (book version) is this: “Though here at journey’s end I lie In darkness buried deep, Beyond all towers strong and high, Beyond all mountains steep, Above all shadows rides the Sun And Stars for ever dwell: I will not say the Day is done, Nor bid the Stars farewell.”

  9. Lydia Palmer 12/20/2012 at 2:51 pm #

Mostly Doctor Who! My favourite quote from the show is “Bowties are cool” Star Trek is also high up on the list :)

  10. Shayla 12/20/2012 at 3:00 pm #

While I have very many different geeky obsessions, such as Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, etc., Tolkien was my first love. My favourite moment is when Galadriel gives Gimli 3 strands of her hair. It is such a momentous event! Most likely Legolas and Gandalf see the significance, but the others in the group do not even see what an honour this is. Galadriel refused to give even a single strand of her hair to Feanor, who begged her three times for it. Instead, when Gimli asks for one out of humility, she gives him three. She saw directly into his heart and recognized that, even though he was a dwarf, he, because of his goodness, true nature and purity of heart, deserved more than her own kin, who only wished to possess her hair out of a sense of need and domination. It’s a really lovely moment, and I think the origin of the friendship between Legolas and Gimli.

I just discovered the X-Files on Netflix, so that’s my latest geeky indulgence. I always try and work “I want to believe” into everyday conversation!

  12. Mallory 12/20/2012 at 3:21 pm #

I’m currently obsessed with Game of Thrones- and the costumes on the tv adpatation are awesome! I like the descriptions of the clothing and food in the books as well.
I own a sewing shop in Columbia, MO- and I’m working on embroidered pillows that say “Winter is Coming” on them!

  13. Candy 12/20/2012 at 5:14 pm #

I’m a big Studio Ghibli fan! I think Miyazaki is one of the most talented and joyous film makers out there! My favorite moment comes from Spirited Away, when Chihiro is on the train. There are shadow people, people from the real world, who don’t notice her or her companions. But one little girl on the platform watches as the train pulls away– she notices Chihiro, she notices you the viewer, acknowledging you exist! It’s one of the best moments in Cinema.

  14. Jess 12/20/2012 at 5:22 pm #

“Geeky indulgence?” You mean you’re asking me to choose?

Well, I must say that I’ve been on an Avengers kick lately (despite my crowning love for DC, as well as all things Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, plain old sci-fi, and just nerd culture in general.)

“Being a nerd just means you’re passionate about something.” -Zachary Levi

And it would seem that I am passionate about everything. But you asked me to specify, so I shall try to single out one particular moment.

“You lack conviction.” -Agent Phil Coulson
    *SPOILERS AHEAD*
The part when Coulson passes is undoubtedly the most epic moment over the course of the Marvel movie franchise. It is the moment where the one who started it all must sacrifice his own life to light the fire again. It is the moment where the team stops being a dysfunctional bunch of bickering misfits and turn into a well-oiled machine. (That said, I am also a TvTropes addict.) It is the moment where everyone has something to fight for- something real to fight for- something to avenge.

(This geek is also a part of the Inception, Avatar: the Last Airbender, all things comic book, Lackadaisy, Disney, Big Bang Theory, DragonBall (and Z and GT), and pretty much everything else fandoms in addition to the ones listed above.)

  15. Caitlyn 12/20/2012 at 5:54 pm #

This is definitely my favorite book of the month giveaway so far! I love most of the popular nerdy stories: star wars, harry potter, lord of the rings, song of ice and fire, etc. Harry Potter is probably my favorite, as I grew up with Harry but Star Wars is definitely my most quoted! My boyfriend and I always say “I love you” “I know”. Thanks for the chance to win!

  16. Emma 12/20/2012 at 5:54 pm #

My whole family is stars wars fans, and cooks. :)
I just started getting into the “geekdom” Sherlock has been my current indulgence, also the Hobbit. (How can you not love Morgan Freeman?)
This would be a wonderful cookbook to get!
    :)

  17. Barb 12/20/2012 at 5:56 pm #

Star Wars + cooking, who could not love that?! Thanks for the chance to win! I love all the nerdy cult classics. My most quoted would have to be from LOTR, when Bilbo says “I feel… thin. Sort of stretched, like… butter scraped over too much bread”. I quote that once every finals week via facebook!

  18. An Scenic World 12/20/2012 at 6:02 pm #

I’m a LotR tragic. In the films, I always crack up at Legolas making unnecessary comments to the air, but overall anything with Eomer is the best. He’s such a jock. I love it.

  19. Katrina 12/20/2012 at 6:04 pm #

I love Star Wars, but my favorite geeky indulgence (also a guilty pleasure) is the movie Willow. I know it wasn’t a great success, but I’ve always liked it. Shh! Don’t tell.

    • christical 12/20/2012 at 6:48 pm #

      It’s cool. I’m a Willow fan too. ;-)

  20. Sydney 12/20/2012 at 6:05 pm #

I am ALL about The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings right now!!! Well, I have been for a while, lol. I love the amazing fans, the costumes they come up with/create and the stories themselves! Tolkien was a genius! My favorite quite: “In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit’” because that’s where it all began.

  21. Tony Schmidt 12/20/2012 at 6:10 pm #

I’m a huge nerd, collect toys, comics, movies, you name it!! I love the SW Expanded Universe since Zahn and Anderson’s book series. Of course this is all mandatory being from George Lucas’s hometown. My favorite character has always been Boba Fett, regardless of how trendy it became. “He’s no good to me dead.”

  22. Jordan Riley 12/20/2012 at 6:20 pm #

I love Doctor Who. A lot of other geekdoms as well, but especially Doctor Who. I have a special place in my heart for the episode “Christmas Invasion”… and really any of the Christmas specials. And really any of the episodes, for that matter.

  23. Sarah 12/20/2012 at 6:25 pm #

Wow, this is a difficult question, assuming “geeky” means anything not kindly and popularly received by the general public! There are quite a few fandoms I’d say I belong in and fawn over that are regarded as geeky, yet they seem to be quite different from one another. Doctor Who is definitely not like the Lord of the Rings, while the Lord of the Rings is definitely not like any DC or Marvel Comic adaptions, like The Avengers or the Dark Knight Trilogy. Doctor Who might just be a bit closer to my heart than any other show, though, and it is quite geeky with its wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey…stuff. My favorite quote would have to be the one I was able to memorize by heart because it was a bit of a pick-me-up as I imagined it coming from the Doctor, and that was, “The way I see it, life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant,” or even, “In 900 years of time and space, I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important.” Both quotes are so inspirational and uplifting for a show aimed for children! I just adore Doctor Who for turning out to be much more than I bargained for, yet a bargain I’m so glad I made. As for moments that make me cripple with glee, I’d have to say the bit in the episode, “Partners in Crime,” where Donna and the Doctor are both spying on Foster and the journalist and what’s really happening in the Adipose Industries and they make eye contact! Donna just goes at it with the mouthing and she’s so ecstatic and the Doctor is shocked, and, man, what a cute scene. I’ll watch the episode hundreds of time just to watch that scene again, I never tire of it.
    Merry Christmas to you, Modcloth!

  24. Gabby 12/20/2012 at 6:27 pm #

All of my ringtones on my cellular device just so happen to be all Star Wars… They would happen to be “these are not the droids we are looking for”, “do Or do not There is no try”, and “rawwwwwwwwwrrrrr” by chewie! (:

  25. Lauren 12/20/2012 at 6:30 pm #

I love all things Harry Potter. I could literally watch all the movies in a row and not get bored at all. But this quote has always stuck with me. I think this is one of the truest things you can learn.

“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.”

  26. Sarah 12/20/2012 at 6:40 pm #

Oh, dear. Picking my favorite geeky indulgence… Whilst I’m a fan of Star Wars, Star Trek (cannot wait for the new movie with Benedict Cumberbatch), Firefly, The Avengers, LotR, Stargate SG-1 & Atlantis, and Torchwood, I’m probably most obsessed with Doctor Who.

And my favorite Doctor Who quote/moment? Erm, probably “Big flashy lighty things have me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time…and a crayon.”

  27. Nichole 12/20/2012 at 6:43 pm #

I have a few geeky indulgences like Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter and of course Star Wars (I grew up watching Star Wars with my cousin and building Lego Starship Destroyers with him) but my all time geeky indulgence has to be The Big Bang Theory. They’re my all time favorite geeks. The geeks of the geeks.

Sheldon: Penny, why are you crying?
    Penny: because I’m stupid!
Sheldon: thats no reason to cry. One cries because one is sad. For example, I cry because others are stupid, and that makes me sad.

  28. christical 12/20/2012 at 6:47 pm #

My favorite geeky indulgence would have to be The Princess Bride. I can’t help it; it’s an inconceivably good movie. ;-)
My favorite moment is when the Albino is in the Pit of Despar with Wesley (Elwes’s character) and Wesley asks where he is. The Albino rasps, “The Pit of Desp–” *cough* (normally) “The Pit of Despair.”

  29. laurah88 12/20/2012 at 6:47 pm #

I sometimes worry at my state of geekiness…but it seems to work for my boyfriend and I, and that’s all that matters isn’t it? Some of my geekiness includes a love of Star Wars, Dr Who, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter etc. But I think I take the cake at my obsession with Lord of the Rings. Here in Australia we have a beautiful area called the ‘Blue Mountains’ undertaking a holiday there a few years ago my friends and I would embark on bush walks yelling a variety of LOTR quotes at the top of our lungs including: “To the bridge of Kazakdoom”, “A miiine, they call is a miiine”, “Legolas what do your elf eyes see”…and so on!
One of my favourite Dr Who quotes can’t be forgotten here either. I have been known to say this at work all the time: “There’s something that doesn’t make sense, let’s go poke it with a stick.”

  30. buttonlandia 12/20/2012 at 6:48 pm #

My geekies indulgence is playing video games. It helps me unwind. It’s a nice distraction sometimes. There’s not really quotes in the games I play. However my favorite quote from a geeky movie (Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy) is
“A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can’t see it, it can’t see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”
― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

  31. Julie Chelminski 12/20/2012 at 6:55 pm #

I’m super-geeked for A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones. I don’t want spoil anyone’s read/watch by posting my favourite quote. Luckily, I also love the Lord of the Rings films. The line my husband and I use often is Treebeard’s to Merry: “That doesn’t make sense to me, but then again, you are very small.” I”m also partial to Denethor’s advice: “Go now and die in what way seems best to you.” Very practical.

  32. Alexis 12/20/2012 at 6:56 pm #

My most geeky indulgence is STAR WARS! I have a collection of action figures, both current and vintage. It all started when I was a kid and found my dad’s collection of Star Wars action figures in the basement. They were from the 70′s and 80′s when the movies came out and they were stashed in this Darth Vader bust that was made for collecting the toys. I’m always on the lookout for vintage Star Wars items and I love anything geeky, like this cookbook. I was so excited to see Modcloth starting to add Star Wars things. Every year, I paint my Easter Eggs as Star Wars characters and I almost carved a Death Star pumpkin for Halloween (but it proved to be very difficult).

My favorite quote is from the conversation between Obi-Wan and a stormtrooper: Obi-Wan:“… These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.” Stormtrooper: “These aren’t the droids we’re looking for…”. Thanks for the opportunity!

  33. Lauren 12/20/2012 at 7:14 pm #

I love all things nerdy, but my biggest indulgence is definitely Doctor Who. I mean, who doesn’t love a ma’am with a box sporting a bow tie and a fez?!?

My favorite quote from the series (and of all time, actually) is from the Eleventh Doctor:
“I am, and always will be, the optimist. The hoper of far-flung hopes and the dreamer of improbable dreams.”

    • Lauren 12/20/2012 at 7:15 pm #

      *mad man* (not “ma’am”)

  34. Emelie B 12/20/2012 at 7:17 pm #

This would be such a great gift for my boyfriend! I think my favorite geeky indulgence has got to be Harry Potter. My favorite quote is “it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live”.

  35. Vanessa 12/20/2012 at 7:24 pm #

Star Wars is everything to me. Literally. I’ve been enjoying it since I was a kid and still do and spend my hard earned money on collecting Star Wars figurines and toys. My favorite moment in Star Wars is when the Ewoks help the alliance defeat the evil Empire on Endor. Everyone always says that Return of the Jedi is their least favorite movie because of the Ewoks but I still love it. I will always love it. No matter how small you are, you are never to small to be a part of something important!

  36. Julie @White Lights on Wednesday 12/20/2012 at 7:32 pm #

Oh gosh, I’m going to have to go with SLC Punk. I’m so in love with that movie.

It’s a long quote, but seriously my favorite part of the movie:

Liquor Store Man: What the hell are you?
Stevo: ooo, we come from the east in search of the Messiah! We followed that big star
Eddie: Yeah, we bring gold, and frankincense.
    Stevo: You see it?
    Eddie: and myrrh.
Stevo, Eddie: Myrrh. Yeah, yeah, Myrrh.
Liquor Store Man: You do what?
    Stevo: Followed the star.
Liquor Store Man: Oh my God. Who let you boys out of the state institute? We’d better get you boys back in the hospital.
Bob: No, no, no, no, no, it’s all right, man. We’re from England.
    Liquor Store Man: England?
Bob: Yeah, that’s right. That’s probably why we seem so weird to you, man.
Liquor Store Man: England, huh? Well that explains it I guess.

  37. Lynn S 12/20/2012 at 7:33 pm #

Star Wars is definately my favorite geeky indulgence. Lord of the Rings comes in a close second. My husband and I have definately let our love of star wars rub on off our kids too. They love sitting down and watching the movies.

My favorite line from the movie is “fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” I have actually used this quote with my son after a nightmare and said it in my silly yoda voice. He cracked up and the nightmare was forgotten.

  38. lmschulte 12/20/2012 at 7:35 pm #

Star Wars is definately my favorite geeky indulgence. But Lord of the Rings comes in a close second. Our children love the movies as much as my husband and I.

My favorite line is “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” I have actually used this quote with my son after he had a nightmare. After I said the line in my silly yoda voice the nightmare was forgotten.

  39. elliesings88 12/20/2012 at 7:44 pm #

Firefly is definitely my absolute favorite geeky indulgence – I usually watch the entire series from end to end in one go. One of my favorite quotes is from the episode “Out of Gas” when River says to Shepherd “You’re afraid that we’re going to run out of air. That we’ll die gasping. But that’s not going to happen… We’ll freeze to death first.” The way she says it so matter-of-factly without looking the least bit concerned cracks me up every time.

  40. Ashley 12/20/2012 at 7:48 pm #

My favorite geeky indulgences are definitely Star Wars (of course!), Spider-Man, and Firefly. I’m an avid comic book reader, so any Dark Horse Star Wars series I’m all about. I’m such a dedicated Star Wars fan that I even have the Jedi Order symbol tattooed on my arm! I also grew up on Star Wars and Spidey, reading The Amazing Spider-Man comics late into the night. However, Star Wars will always hold the biggest place in my heart. A quote I live by is “Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter,” in which Yoda tells Luke in The Empire Strikes Back. This really resonates with me because I totally believe that we are so much more than the sum of our parts.

  41. Caressa 12/20/2012 at 8:12 pm #

My favorite geeky indulgence is Avatar: The Last Airbender (The TV Show). I’m so happy I was really bored one day and turned it on.
The characters say plenty of hilarious and meaningful things, but to be honest my absolute favorite episode is where The Avatar (Aang) is worried about facing the main antagonist in the battle to come and can’t sleep. Eventually he has hilarious hallucinations that get more and more erratic. Keels me over every time.

  42. Natalie 12/20/2012 at 8:16 pm #

I’m a huge fangirl and I’m part of a bunch of fandoms (Harry Potter, Star Wars, Disney, etc.) but my favourite geeky indulgence would have to be drinking Butterbeer Frapps with my university’s Quidditch team after practice.
A day never goes by without me singing Disney songs during practice, but one of my favourite quotes (which I happen to have plastered in my room above my light switch) would have to be “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Dumbledore

  43. Amber 12/20/2012 at 8:32 pm #

While I am a huge fan of Star Trek (especially TNG), Harry Potter, and Star Wars (and love Lord of the Rings and Dr. Who as well), Star Wars is my all-time favorite. One of my earliest memories is going to the theatre to see Jedi. My kindergarten class named the class hamster Leia. And my hands-down favorite quote come from Leia and Han. My husband and I both often reply to “I love you.” with “I know.”

  44. FrozenBeachBum 12/20/2012 at 8:56 pm #

My favorite geeky indulgence is hands down BattleStar Galactica, and yes I’m getting real geeky now. I love everything about this series and every time I watch it again I notice something new. Soooo I got my family hooked on the show because when they realized they couldn’t stop me, they joined me. Galactica commander William Adama and Viper pilot Kara “Starbuck” Thrace share a greeting on the show, their relationship has a very father-daughter feel. They say…
Adama: What do you hear, Starbuck?
Starbuck: Nothing but the rain, sir.
Adama: Then get your gun, and bring the cat in.
    Starbuck: Boom boom boom.
And so now my Pops and I greet each other this way, yup like geek father like geek daughter!
    P.s
    He would love this cookbook!

  45. Jacqueline 12/20/2012 at 9:01 pm #

Favorite geeky indulgence……. Like seriously, I don’t even have to think about it. I grew up on Episodes IV-VI.

Family movie night when I was little? Star Wars.

Scariest thing to 3-year-old-me? Freaking Jabba the Hut.

Favorite movie? “The one with the little teddy bear things.”

And, because everyone in the whole modern world knows it… “No, Luke…. I AM your father!”

  46. Atruthoradair 12/20/2012 at 9:05 pm #

I am OBSESSED with Kurt Vonnegut. Like, I’ve read all the books and seen the crappy movies and have his quotes on my inspiration wall. My geekiest indulgence is re-reading Slaughterhouse Five (for the 84,000th time) by the pool during the summer. The juxtaposition of my real-life and the book scenarios (my hot, sunny, beautiful weather vs POW camps and the firebombing of Dresden) make me appreciate the message so much. I even got a tattoo of my favorite phrase, “so it goes,” near my ribcage.

While it’s not a “traditional” thing to geek out about, my Vonnegut love is my most favorite quirk. I wish I had been able to hear him speak while he was alive – pack of Pall Malls in his cardigan pocket, hair flying everywhere. He was the misanthropic grandpa everyone wishes they had – just as likely to hand you a butterscotch candy as he was to engage you in deep discussion on the indiscretions of your generation.

  47. FrozenBeachBum 12/20/2012 at 9:06 pm #

Ok I tried to post this before so I apologize if it shows up twice.

My ultimate favorite geeky indulgence is definitely hands down BattleStar Galactica! I have nothing but praise for this show and I’m so excited for the new movie to come out in February! I got my family to watch the show, they adopted the attitude of ; if we can’t understand her might as well join her. My pops in particular really liked the show (we both love sci-fi) In the show Commander Adama and Viper pilot Kara “Starbuck” Threse share a greeting. They have a father-daughter relationship. They say:
Adama: What do you hear, Starbuck?
Starbuck: Nothing but the rain, sir.
Adama: Then get your gun, and bring the cat in.
    Starbuck: Boom boom boom.
Now to super geek this up… My dad and I know greet each other this way. So there ya have it modcloth, a geeky family moment haha
    Ps
Pops loves Star Wars and would flip for this book!

I wouldn’t rate “geeky-ness” as an indulgence, when actually it is us, me, my lil family personified. But if I had to say what we indulge in as far as this goes, it is star wars beyond a doubt. My kids are totally stoked about the new films set to come out. Also is the man of the house. So, to chose a favorite quote or moment will be difficult. How about “laugh it up fuzzball” from Star Wars Episode V. Or when a newly evil Vader says: “you will try”. Don’t know why that one sticks out but it does. I think its because it shows how arrogant he is or was. Whatever. There it is. I hope we win, it would make all us big and small geeks happy campers.

  49. Ann 12/20/2012 at 10:03 pm #

My favorite geeky indulgence is most definitely, without a doubt , my love for Star Wars! Coming in at a close second is my love for Marvel comics, Xmen and Wolverine! Anyway, I love episodes IV, V and VI, but when I started reading the novels, it was like I had died and gone to heaven! Boba Fett’s alive! Anyway, “Who’s Scruffy looking?” “TK-421?”

  50. Allie 12/20/2012 at 10:35 pm #

I grew up watching Star Wars. And used to act/play it out with my friends. I was always Princess Leia and made my little sister be an Ewok. I indulge in all the major “nerdy” movies. I geeked out when my client was working with Peter Jackson. So for Christmas, she asked him sign a ‘The Hobbit’ merchandise for me. I freaked when I opened it. My favorite quote is “All that is gold does not glitter; not all those that wander are lost.” -J.R.R.Tolkien

  51. Danielle 12/20/2012 at 10:47 pm #

My favorite geeky indulgence has got to be either Harry Potter or Doctor Who. It’s a close tie but considering I have an ‘allons-y’ Doctor Who tattoo, let’s go with that.

“The good things don’t always soften the bad, but vise-versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”

  52. ButterandBuntings 12/20/2012 at 11:01 pm #

Thanks for this blog post! Just bought this book off your site. Perfect pressie for a family member of mine. He will get it late unfortunatly but thats ok!

  53. Victoria 12/20/2012 at 11:13 pm #

My favorite geeky pastime is actually a tradition my boyfriend and I started. We watch the extended versions of Lord of the Rings, in order over the course of a whole day. I love watching the story over and over, and spending such a big chunk of time with my boyfriend brings us closer together. I cry every time they bow to the hobbits.

One theme that hits me hard each time I watch it is the importance of loyalty and friendship, which is why Samwise Gamgee is someone I aspire to be like.

” ‘Don’t you lose him, Samwise Gamgee!’ And I don’t mean to.”

Can’t wait to go see The Hobbit!

  54. katy 12/20/2012 at 11:19 pm #

oh goodness i have to pick one ? ok than dr.who!

“He’s like fire and ice and rage. He’s like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun.
He’s ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and he can see the turn of the universe
    And…………………..He is WONDERFUL”

  55. emilypeiss 12/21/2012 at 1:06 am #

My favorite geeky indulgences would be the worlds of Star Wars, Midddle Earth, Star Trek, Never Land and Monty Python.

If I can only choose one, I will select an exchange between Sam and Frodo in JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Sam: “…But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going Because they were holding on to something.”

Frodo: “What are we holding onto, Sam?”

Sam: “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.”

  56. Carlijn Bakker 12/21/2012 at 5:41 am #

My favourite cheeky indulgence would be the film: ‘Labyrinth’. I loved it when I was young and I still love it now as a young adult. I still daydream about the castle beyond the goblin city, and let’s be honest here if David Bowie asked you: “Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave”, I would have said: “Okay, see you later little brother”, but that is just me.

  57. Jackie 12/21/2012 at 7:07 am #

Oh man, too many geeky indulgences to count! Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Firefly, …um. Does Princess Bride count as “geeky”? Because I’ve been known to say “as you wish” far too often.

  58. donna walker 12/21/2012 at 7:09 am #

My favorite geeky thing is zombies. I am completely obsessed with zombie movies, shows, games, novels. The walking dead is the top of the list and I have collected every issue of the comic series so far. My favorite quote from the comic series is when breaks down and tells Tyrese “We are the walking dead!”

  59. Allison 12/21/2012 at 7:53 am #

I was a huge X-Men fan as a kid; I lived for the cartoon and I collected the comics and trading cards. I idolized Rogue. My all-time favorite geeky indulgence, though, is “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” I was obsessed with the show when it originally aired, and I’ve re-watched the series several times. Most of my favorite quotes come from Anya, who is hands-down the best character on the show. My favorite would probably have to be her poignant and tear-jerking speech about death before Buffy’s mom’s funeral:

“I don’t understand how this all happens. How we go through this. I mean, I knew her, and then she’s- There’s just a body, and I don’t understand why she just can’t get back in it and not be dead anymore. It’s stupid. It’s mortal and stupid. And-and Xander’s crying and not talking, and-and I was having fruit punch, and I thought, well, Joyce will never have any more fruit punch ever, and she’ll never have eggs, or yawn or brush her hair, not ever, and no one will explain to me why.”

  60. Pita 12/21/2012 at 8:12 am #

Ok lets see, I like Star Trek the original series and Next Generation . The movie Time Bandits is a scream. But I would have to say I love StarWars!!!!!!!!!! I can not begin to tell you how much. Star wars is a delightful thing a brilliantine man created in 1977 that will live on forever. From the story, to the magical places you are taken. I think the first StarWars, (the original 3) are the best And I must say the clone wars series!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!! Ok I am a total geek. I have a T- shirt collection of StarWars shirts that numbers over 30 shirts. and periodically will dress like a Jedi or a bounty hunter. The best line in any geeky movie, series, or book series is…..

Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. ~Yoda~

  61. Layni Bowen 12/21/2012 at 8:33 am #

    Doctor who!

“The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”

  62. Brittany Smith 12/21/2012 at 9:17 am #

The Labyrinth! I can recite the entire opening sequence and people always think that’s totally geeky… “Give me the child…through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the goblin city…”

  63. Charlotte Dunn 12/21/2012 at 9:54 am #

I am a TOTAL ‘Firefly’ geek. I adore it (to the point where I am constructing a replica Kaylee costume.

My favourite line has to be: “I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you.”

  64. Rosabella 12/21/2012 at 1:04 pm #

For me, “geeky” means “really cool literature and popular culture”. I love all role-playing games with their fun and foibles (“mmmm, I come upon a wizard’s lab full of potions. What happens if I mix them?” “Boom” Get new character) I also love anime, including everything from Studio Ghibli and some series like Slayers, Lupin III and Cowboy Bebop. A quote? Not really a quote, but after watching “My neighbour Totoro” you will be humming that little song all day long and thinking that all buses are really gigantic cats….

  65. Natalee 12/21/2012 at 4:16 pm #

Glad to hear there are so many fellow Whovians out there! Every time I try to explain the show to someone, they give me a really weird look. My first geeky-love would have to be Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although I love Star Wars (a little too much), TNG was such a big part of my childhood. I swooned over Wesley Crusher in every episode, even as a wee one in Kindergarten!

  66. Natalee 12/21/2012 at 4:20 pm #

Oops! I forgot my quote! It would have to be “Earl Grey. Hot.” I’m a tea drinker and I say it all the time at restaurants.

    • Angela 12/22/2012 at 1:34 pm #

Natalee, I was JUST saying how much I love Star Trek TNG! Worf is the best! Thank you for commenting. :)

  67. Kristie 12/21/2012 at 5:57 pm #

I’m a huge Star Wars geek, but outside that franchise I like to geek out to Firefly. I love the dialogue – one instance being when Mal says “next time you want to stab me in the back have the guts to do it to my face.”

  68. Sara 12/22/2012 at 1:26 am #

    Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

“And the only person that I can even stand to be around is a… neutered vampire who cheats at kitten poker.”

  69. hapatite 12/22/2012 at 11:15 am #

I’ll definitely need to go with the “Do or Do Not. There is no Try”. My dad & I love Star Wars, especially Yoda and quote it to each other all the time!

  70. Natallee Zufelt 12/22/2012 at 8:01 pm #

my favorite geeky indulgence would have to be the AVENGERS!!! Love them! I have read and still read the comics and I cried when the movie came out. My favorite quote is when Tony is talking to Loki and he tells him, “We may not always be able to protect the world, but you can be d*** sure we’ll avenge it.” I even wrote a poem around that quote. Silly to some but special to me!

  71. Ana 12/23/2012 at 12:01 am #

Let’s see, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Harry Potter (the books, not the films), LOTR, and probably many others!
(It’s really difficult to choose just one thing, so I’ll just go with the first that came to me!)
There’s this quote I really love from one of the HP books. I think it was the end of Goblet of Fire, and there’s Hagrid that says to Harry “What’s coming will come, and we’ll meet it when it does.”. This line always inspired me.

  72. Brenda 12/23/2012 at 7:43 am #

My favorite geeky indulgence would be all of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. I read them as often as time allows. The Lord of the Rings are definitely my favorite books and movies of all time. Nothing even comes close. I don’t have a favorite quote, but my favorite story is that of Beren and Luthien. The mortal man who fell in love with an elf. Luthien gave up her immortality to be with him. Swoon!

  73. Hannah 12/23/2012 at 4:40 pm #

I, like many other ModClother-ers before me, am a multi-faceted geek. Most recently, I’ve been rediscovering Buffy the Vampire Slayer (thank you, Netflix!) It’s such a ridiculous show, but there’s still something compelling about it through all the cheese ball-ness. It’s unabashedly goofy, which is what I enjoy about it the most. Any of Buffy’s expertly-timed-in-fight comebacks or taunts are enjoyable, but one of my favorites has to be “I may be dead, but I’m still pretty, which is more than I can say for you.”

  74. Kel Marie 12/23/2012 at 7:04 pm #

As I sit here writing this I have an R2D2 necklace on. This year for Halloween I made myself a Han Solo outfit and made a Chewbacca belt for my lil yorkie chihuahua mix (we’re all geeks in this family ;) It’s not just the movies that make Star Wars so awesome, it’s the camaraderie that goes with it. Having movie marathons with friends and using the films as a reference point when talking every day. It brings us closer together.
The quote I throw out there most often (and what I try to use as my personal motto) is: “Do or do not, there is no try.”
    Very wise is Yoda :P

My geekiest indulgence has to be the Myst games. I watched my dad play the original Myst when I was young, and ever since then the graphics and puzzles and mysteries have been in my head. Finally, after college I had tons of free time and beat the game! I started playing Riven, the sequel, and plan on playing the next four games after I beat it. My favorite moment was calling my father and telling him I, too, beat Myst, a goal I had for years. Accomplishing this made me so proud and let my dad and I bond over something we both did.

  76. Alessandra 12/26/2012 at 5:34 am #

Star Wars + cookie = the perfect combo!! <3

  77. Hannah Wither 12/26/2012 at 7:22 am #

Has got to be Dr. Who! I loved David Tennant but Matt Smith is just as awesome. I don’t have a fav quote, but if I did it would be anytime he mentions how cool his bow tie is! Or the time he tried to bring the fez back! :)

  78. Kara 12/26/2012 at 9:02 am #

My geeky indulgence would have to be anything Joss Whedon – my favorite being the Firefly series and Serenity movie, but I won’t turn down Buffy or Angel if they are on TV. In fact, I just got Firefly on Blu-ray and we spent our Christmas having a Firefly marathon. “There’s no power in the ‘verse that can stop me”

  79. Alicia 12/26/2012 at 9:35 am #

My favorite geeky indulgence? My FAVORITE? I love so many, can’t choose a favorite. But I will say right now my time is largely taken up by the world of H.P. Lovecraft.

    “Ph’nglui Mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn.”
(“In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.”)

“What a man does for pay is of little significance. What he is, as a sensitive instrument responsive to the world’s beauty, is everything!” -Lovecraft

  80. Priscilla 12/27/2012 at 7:17 am #

Picking a favorite is hard, since it totally depends on the mood I’m in. ;) But from the time I first watched Star Wars in the movie theater as a kid, I’ve been hooked. Sharing with my kids was awesome!
Favorite quote from the SW movies? Yoda, of course! “Do, or do not. There is no try.”
Han Solo was my first bad boy crush!

  81. Kate & Zena 12/27/2012 at 9:04 pm #

I love Star Wars! My favorite quote is “Do or do not, there is not try.”

  82. Cassy 12/28/2012 at 5:29 pm #

DOCTOR WHO! Seriously, I’d try to explain to you how much I love it but you’d need two hearts to understand ;) One of my favorite quotes are “I’m going to need a SWAT team ready to mobilize, street level maps covering all of Florida, a pot of coffee, 12 jammy dodgers and a fez!”
    <3

My geek indulgence is anime. I enjoy watching new series and re watching old ones. There are several genres that there is something for everyone young and old. I have too many favorites to name but I will name a few (in no particular order): Lupin The Third, Sailor Moon, Ano Hana, Cowboy Bebop, Danshi Koukousei No Nichijou, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Rurouni Kenshin, Dragon Ball Z, Black Rock Shooter, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Persona 4 the TV Animation, Inu X Boku SS, etc… I even go to anime conventions. Every year I go to Anime Expo. It is awesome and every year I enjoy going there. I’ve been going to this expo for about 6 years now.
In addition to watching anime and going to conventions, I’ve started to collect figures. My preference are nendoroids and nendoroid petites. They are sooooo cute and tiny. Everyday, I take time to dust my collection and make sure they all look nice.

As for a favorite quote from an anime:
“So I was not born with a whole lot of natural talent, not gifted like Neji. But I work hard and I never give up. That is my gift. That is my ninja way!” -Rock Lee from the series Naruto (This series has been running for 10 years and going!)

  84. Sarah 12/28/2012 at 10:25 pm #

My favourite geeky indulgence is watching 60s shows like Stingray, Thunderbirds, The Avengers and The Munsters.

“Anything can happen in the next half hour”, from Stingray, was said so often in my household that I’m always surprised when I say it and then have to explain where it comes from!

As the saying goes, they don’t make ‘em like they used to!

  85. Sarah S. 12/29/2012 at 10:15 am #

I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, so that must be my geeky indulgence, however I like much much more geeky things. Doctor Who has to be the ones I’m most obsessed with tho lol.

My favorite quote from Doctor Who is hard to pin down because it is filled with memorable quotes…but here is a good one from one of my favorite moments: “The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. Good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant.”
Also this line: “I am and always will be the optimist. The Hoper of far-flung hopes. The Dreamer of improbable dreams.”

  86. Ashley J 12/29/2012 at 5:48 pm #

My boyfriend and I like to geek out at the flea market. We look through endless bins of action figures and collectibles. We also troll around the vintage comic book sections. My favouirte find was a Chewbacca Burger King Cup from the 70′s, Everyone who comes over wants to drink out of it and take it home. On the topic of Star Wars, I like this quote by Yoda: “Do or do not. There is no try.”

  87. Kris 12/30/2012 at 10:58 am #

“As you wish” – my favorite quote from one of the most romantic geeky movies of all time; Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. (You know, from that moment when Darth Vader is talking to the bounty hunters and doesn’t want any disintegrations! Boba Fett replys “As you wish.” But what he was really saying to Vader was “I love you.”)

But seriously, Star Wars AND The Princess Bride are my top two favorite geeky indulgences!

Seeing that in my household you walk in and the first thing you see are models of star ships from Star Trek, I’m going to have to say that is my favorite geek indulgence. It is by far not the biggest, but it has been the longest lasting starting when I was in elementary school. My favorite quote would have to be from Spock and goes a little something like this.

‘I have never understood the female capacity to avoid a direct answer to any question.’
    – ‘This Side of Paradise’

He is a man of wisdom. Just like Yoda.

  90. librarianeats 12/30/2012 at 5:25 pm #

My current geeky indulgence is the Star Wars Jedi Apprentice book series… “I thought it was just a pretty rock.” Qui-Gon Jin

  91. Shannon 12/30/2012 at 8:14 pm #

I’m a Trekkie so I’m always quoting anything from the movies to the tv series and one of my favorites is – “Captain, life is not a dream.” — Spock (Star Trek V)

  92. Sarah 12/30/2012 at 8:17 pm #

I love the lord of the rings series.
    greatest ever.

my favorite quote all time would be when gandalf is talking to pippin.
“end? no, the journey doesn’t end here. death is just another path. one that we all must take. the grey rain curtains of this world rolls back and all turns to silver glass…and then you see it…….
white shores…and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.”

  93. Brittney 12/30/2012 at 8:29 pm #

Doctor Who. Hands down. Favorite feels-inducing quote:
“We’re all stories in the end. Just make it a good one…”

  94. Julia 12/31/2012 at 9:03 am #

Just reading all these comments is fantastic. It makes me happy to see so many indulging in geekiness! To quote John Green, “When people call people nerds, mostly what they are saying is, ‘You like stuff’, which is just not a good insult at all, like ‘You are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’”
I love all things Tolkien, Doctor Who, Avengers, Harry Potter, Disney, Big Bang Theory, Star Wars, Narnia, Sherlock, and so much more. There’s just so much brilliant stuff out there that waits to be discovered!

One of my favourite quotes is from Doctor Who, and I love it so much because it reflects the nature of human relationships and how they can change if we take a closer look at the people around us so well:
“You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful and then actually talk to them and five minutes later they’re as dull as a brick? Then there’s other people, when you meet them you think, “Not bad. They’re okay.” And then you get to know them and…and their face sort of becomes them. Like their personality’s written all over it. And they just turn into something so beautiful.”

  95. Joy 12/31/2012 at 1:10 pm #

Choosing only one favorite geeky indulgence is hard because my whole life is consumed by them…I’m the captain of a quidditch team, I can recite a lot Pride and Prejudice from memory, I got Ravenclaw robes for Christmas, and my walls are decorated with posters of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, and Nerdfighteria.

But I’m going to go with Lord of the Rings and say that my favorite line is “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door…You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

    :)
