I’ve been taking outfit photos and sharing them online in some way since 2006. It’s a fun way to document what you’re wearing, and I love to go back and look at old outfit photos to remember what I did that day and how I felt at the time. Posting them is sort of like scrapbooking. We can look back a week, a month — years even — to see what we were into at the time and to recall memories we may have forgotten otherwise.
This outfit photo was taken during the very end of the holiday season of 2007, the first year I spent working on ModCloth full-time. Our team was still very small, and we were working out of our house in the Friendship neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I spent almost every evening down in our basement, packing up the last of the day’s orders. I’m sure anyone else who runs (or has ever run) a small online business knows that feeling!
To celebrate the end of the season, Eric (my husband) and I treated ourselves to a fancy dinner date, and I wore this outfit. I picked it because it made me feel glamorous and fancy — very important after a month of evenings in the basement — and it made me happy. I don’t really believe in fashion ‘rules’ except for this: wear what makes you happy. If you’re feeling good, you’ll look good, too — it doesn’t matter if you’ve mixed black and navy, worn white after Labor Day, etcetera.
You can see even today, I’m still choosing my outfits based on what makes me smile, so I can share that happiness with others through fashion.
When I wore this rainbow sweater (above), an elderly woman came up to me and smiled and said, “That’s such a nice sweater.” Knowing I brought that little bit of happiness into her life was so special. I think fashion lets you share your light, your spark, with the world through what you wear.
Then, when you share outfit photos online, you get to extend that real life experience tenfold. You get to take it even further. I talk a little bit about this in my recent feature in Refinery29, too, so feel free to take a peek.
Now, I want to be inspired by your looks. Upload your own photos (old, new, or anything in between) to our Style Gallery, and tell me — what do you wear when you’re in a good mood?
