It goes without saying that Anna Sui is one of the most influential and iconic fashion designers of our time. Each season, her collections inspire us with her mixes of cool cultural references and timeless designs. We’re over the moon to be offering a sweet selection her very special dresses here at ModCloth for the very first time! In honor of the occasion, we caught up with Anna Sui to talk about her latest collection and to get a few styling tips for pulling off these statement-making pieces.
We’re super excited to be getting a few dresses from your Spring 2013 collection. Can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind the collection?
My Spring 2013 show was inspired by the world of the eccentric French interior decorator Madeleine Castaing. My colors and prints are directly inspired by her iconic palette, textiles, and wallpapers. She favored leopard-print carpets, jade colored walls, and upholstered Second Empire furniture. I liked the idea of injecting a little bit of rebellion into the mix, which can easily be done with edgy, rock ‘n’ roll accessories. I had been listening to a lot of punk music at the time and loved how the early punk performers recited poetry, and the rhythm of their words evolved into Punk music (Patti Smith, Jim Carroll, Richard Hell). Romantic evolves into anarchy and the creation of something new. That was basically the theme for my collection!
We’re particularly enamored with the Playful Palette Dress. What are some ways you would style it and for what occasion?
My Spring 2013 collection was full of feminine summer party dresses! For my runway show, I styled this poppy-print dress with iconic punk details: fishnet leggings, studded dog collars, bright petticoats, and strands of chain necklaces. To tone down the look, simply wear it with a cool metallic sandal or gladiator. This dress would certainly look great at a garden party or office picnic.
Can you talk about the Spring 2013 girl? What is her attitude and personal style?
She is strong, confident. She loves to experiment with fashion, seamlessly mixing romantic, vintage inspired pieces with more eccentric, bold styles. She has a tough rock and roll attitude but never compromises her core feminine, flirty aesthetic!
“Personal style is about what works for your body and what gives you confidence.”
Do you have any tips for girls looking to develop their own personal style? Any ways that Anna Sui pieces might fit into a personal wardrobe?
Personal style is about what works for your body and what gives you confidence. These three dresses, for example, are fun and whimsical but can be paired with staples that are already in your wardrobe, like a cardigan, blazer, or a denim jacket, to make the look your own. Likewise, adding your favorite, statement accessory will give the look a personal touch.
