Lights, camera, action! Above, one of our models takes Marra Mazzella’s winning dress for a spin at a recent photo shoot.
Today, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of our latest Make the Cut Contest design: the Colorful of Ideas Dress, created by winner Marra Mazzella, a 25-year-old New Jersey native and graduate of FIT.
This colorful round of our Make the Cut contest started with this rainbow-colored swatch, and after countless entries and hours of deliberation, our guest judges selected Marra’s excellent sketch. Our team of designers then began the process of transforming her dream to a reality, and we couldn’t be more excited to finally share the finished work! And in honor of the occasion, we caught up with the talented designer behind this radiant frock.
What inspired your design?
For my design, I pictured summer days past. Strolling outdoor flea markets, seeing a movie at the drive-in, walking the boardwalks of the Jersey Shore… these activities are what I had in mind for the girl [who] would wear this dress. All those sights, sounds and colors flooded in when I saw that rainbow swatch.
My biggest push was to make sure there was an element of mixing prints and/or textures. Stripes have been incredibly popular lately, and are so much fun to play with in terms of mixing and matching. For the brave, the possibilities are endless. So, with a classic silhouette in mind — one that I consider to be flattering on most if not all figures — I made sure to block out sections of the dress that I thought could use something extra. I thought the skirt could use a break from all the stripes, so I added a sheer panel of polka dot fabric to give it a playful, flirtatious peekaboo quality.
Where would you wear the Colorful of Ideas Dress?
I would wear it out shopping, on lunch dates with friends, BBQs with family, and to work with a cardigan. It’s a dress that has versatility.
What inspires your personal style?
I’m mostly inspired by different eras, as I love fashion history. My favorite eras are the Victorian era, the ’20s, and the ’50s. I love watching old films or period pieces. I also love looking at style blogs just for personal style. It’s so nice to see everyday females expressing themselves through fashion in such a confident way.
Do you have any fashion trends you’re loving this year?
Lace! I love lace. It’s ultra-feminine and now, with many ways to incorporate it into design and style.
Other than winning the Make the Cut contest, what is something you are really proud of?
I am really proud of (and grateful for) my life in general so far. I graduated from FIT Magna Cum Laude; it was four years of hard work, long nights, and even many tears. But, I pushed through because I am resilient and also because of the support that I have at home. Without them, I’m not sure I’d be the person I am today.
