Fashion in Film: Now and Then

Oh, those childhood pacts — they always come back to haunt you, don’t they? Well, maybe not — while most of us end up forgetting those promises to keep in touch, that’s not the case for the characters in the classic 1995 flick, Now & ThenBringing together Hollywood veterans (Rita Wilson, Rosie O’Donnell, Melanie Griffith, and Demi Moore) and up-and-comers (Thora Birch, Christina Ricci, and Devon Sawa), Now & Then follows the adventures of tomboy Roberta, fashionista Teeny, goody two-shoes Chrissy, and cynic Sam as they survive summer in an Indiana suburb in 1970. Sneaking out for midnight meet-ups, playing Truth or Dare, and taking Cosmo quizzes are just some of the nostalgic adventures the girls get into — and just as their crazy antics will take you back, so will their rad retro ensembles.

With the girls’ personalities varying so greatly, we get a full range of fashion to admire throughout the film. From the quirky, Chrissy’s culottes and Teeny’s stuffed bras, to the classic, Roberta’s baseball tees and Sam’s headbands, Now and Then features some of the best trends of the ’60s and ’70s.

While the ‘now’ of the movie finds the adult friends reuniting in their hometown due to a childhood pact, the ‘then’ takes us back to their most memorable summer, working to save up for their dream treehouse between scheming to get back at the dreaded Wormer brothers and experimenting with seances.

Throw in a dose of adolescent issues, vintage bikes, black cows at the local soda shop, and a killer retro soundtrack, and you’ve got the perfect movie to beat the summer heat — and wax nostalgic on your own childhood friendships.

About Sarah

Who would have thought the little girl in the oversized Goofy T-shirt would grow up to work in fashion? Definitely not young Sarah; she was too busy singing her heart out to Whitney Houston. Today, her eclectic fashion tastes lean toward purses large enough to stash her latest read, way too high of a heel, and the occasional vintage baseball tee.

I loved this movie when I was a kid. As an adult, I’ve realized it’s just a remake of Stand by Me. The fashion is pretty great though.

Amen to the Stand By Me reference. Did the seance trend hit your slumber parties?

Mine did. As well as light as a feather stiff as a board inspired from the craft.

This movie pretty much changed my life when I was a kid. I can remember buying it on VHS at the video store. Now neither of those 2 things exist! This movie inspired me to get on my bike and look for boys. My favorite movie about girlfriends is another 90s classic, Mermaids. They’re mom and daughters, but they’re girlfriends, too.

This was my favorite movie growing up. Interesting to see how fashions change and sometimes come back.

I have always been so in love with the wardrobe in Now & Then… and also the movie itself!
