S’more to Love: Vintage Summer Camp Photos

As a kid (and, admittedly, until I was fifteen years old), there was one thing in the year that I looked forward to more than anything else: summer camp. For nine years, I spent one glorious month of each summer building campfires, jumping into freezing cold lakes, sleeping in cabins with nicknames like ‘The Wreck,’ and maniacally belting out the lyrics to old camp standards like “You Are My Sunshine” and “Old Lady Leary.” My years at summer camp not only taught me practical skills — such as CPR, how to use a compass, and proper friendship-bracelet color-coordination — but, with my fellow campers and counselors hailing from as far away as Venezuela and Australia, made the world that much larger to a kid growing up in relative isolation in the woods of Maine.

To ring in August’s arrival, I thought it would be fun to celebrate summer’s last hurrah with some of the internet’s best vintage camp photos. While you’re at it, grab some marshmallows and bug juice, and join in a round of “The Circle Game” (which, for the record, I now realize is the saddest song to have ever been written).

love the photos – would enjoy knowing the camp names and locations if available – one of them looks familiar – like a camp on Orcas Island off coast of Seattle – am I right?

Ah! Love these photos of summer camp. If there’s one thing I miss about summer, that’s it. My camp just turned 90 this year, and I love looking at all the old photos, including one of my mom at 11 or 12 standing outside of her tent!
