Ask any child of the 1990s, and they most likely had a friend crush on Winona Ryder. Undoubtedly the ‘It Girl’ of the decade, no one else could royally own the pixie cut quite as well as she could, and on top of that, she was just so darn cool.
Before there was Zooey D’s brand of “quirky,” there was Winona’s, which leaned a little more towards strange and dangerous than cute and silly. Her earlier, cult hits like Heathers, Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands brought that image to the forefront of popular culture, as did her appearances in the indie classic Night on Earth and the quintessential slacker flick Reality Bites. Her characters, no matter how varied, always sported a winning combination of goofy, awkward, charming, and totally relatable.
But, in addition to her impressive filmography, Winona’s look truly stands out as iconic. Beyond those big brown eyes and trademark ‘do, her personal style has always been both immediately recognizable and real. She has always been able to make a simple t-shirt and jeans look effortlessly elegant. Even though her hair is longer and her look perhaps a little more glamorous these days (as trends move on, and so do we), she still carries herself in a way that is uniquely chic.
I basically tried to become Winona Ryder once. In college (in the late 1990s, if you must ask), I lopped off my locks to imitate hers. I pinned pictures of her in various ensembles to my closet doors for daily outfit inspiration. I tried to work a t-shirt and oxfords like she could. Here’s photographic proof of my efforts:
Though no one can truly come close to the inimitable Winona, her style is ever-inspiring!
