Fashion in Film: Meet Me in St. Louis

Twirling pastel petticoats, sprigs of cotton candy, and images of the famous World’s Fair at the turn of the century — not exactly your typical holiday scene. But the story of Meet Me in St. Louis isn’t your typical holiday movie.

Set in 1903, the story follows the Smith sisters as they experience big changes throughout the year, ultimately facing the news that they must uproot their lives for a move to New York after their father takes on a new position with his firm. Of course, the family vows to celebrate Christmas together in St. Louis, one last time. Starring Judy Garland, and Margaret O’Brien as the mischievous younger sister “Tootie” — who constantly makes trouble for herself and her sisters — the film’s fashion features Victorian style dresses, ostentatious headwear, white gloves for the ladies, and waistcoats and pocket-watches for the men.

About Amy K.

Born in the basement of the Alamo, Amy is a native Texan who enjoys a good book, a loud song, and the presence of fuzzy creatures. When she's not writing, you can find her sifting through stacks of vinyl, or combing racks of vintage wares.
